Traffic jams follow Chinese president's visit in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS): Traffic snarls followed the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday, bringing some parts of Delhi to a grinding halt.

Motorists witnessed traffic jams on several roads in the morning due to Xi's visit. He is in India on a three-day official trip.

The traffic helpline number also got busy between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. with calls coming from across the city.

The commuters will face jams again in the evening as some roads connecting New Delhi and central Delhi areas are bound only for the VVIP movement, said the traffic department.

The Delhi Traffic Police in an advisory, issued Sep 17, urged people to avoid Dhaula Kuan, Sardar Patel Marg and Ashoka Road for a hassle-free ride Thursday.

To facilitate safe and smooth movement of the VVIPs and their carcade, Sardar Patel Marg will be closed for intermittent periods, said the advisory.

The traffic police have suggested motorists to make maximum use of public transport system, especially the Delhi Metro.

Motorists who were coming towards NH-8 from Dwarka and Gurgaon and destined to New Delhi have witnessed traffic jams on Rao Tula Ram Marg, Moti Bagh Crossing, and Shanti Path.

There was a heavy jam on the Ridge Road. Motorists moving towards Panchsheel Marg and using Sardar Patel Marg faced jams on San Martin Marg.
