Bangalore, Sep 26: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has released Rs 50 crore for taking up urgent relief and rehabilitation measures for the people affected by this week’s heavy rain havoc in Bangalore.

The chief minister, who chaired a high level meeting on the aftermath of the rain havoc during the last few days in the State capital, announced the constitution of a task force headed by the Additional Chief Secretary to study and suggest measures to prevent encroachment of all canals and tankbed areas and also for the management of the heavy downpour in the low-lying areas of the city.

The proposed task force shall have the heads of Bruhat Bangalore MahanagaraPalike, Bangalore Development Authority, BESCOM, Bangalore City Police, Bangalore urban district deputy commissioner and Karnataka Fire Force as members.

Bangalore received a record rainfall of 132 mm in just four hours on Thursday, which is a record for the city in the last 26 tyears.

The heavy rainfall on Thursday resulted in the worst-ever inundation of six major roads in the city and uprooting of 28 trees and 20 electricity poles besides causing damages to 127 houses. Two of the houses in the low-lying areas had collapsed, the chief minister said.
