He further stated that low religious tolerance and lack of moral values are the chief reason for the unruly behaviour of young men of the day.  "Moral values are not even taught in schools these days.  Back in the family too, the situation is not better," he opined.

Mangalore: Cur'few' Hits All - Situation under Control

Pics by Dayanand Kukkaje (clicked at 12-30 pm IST)

Mangalore, Oct 7: Deserted streets, open roads, closed shops and people indoors.

This is perhaps the first time in the city that people are experiencing these developments.  The curfew imposed by the police in order to gain control over the violence which had rocked the city and its surroundings has hit the lives of the people real hard.

While the curfew has been imposed to the optimum, police are still going around the city caning those coming out of their houses in violation of the curfew order.  No mercy is shown to anyone for any reasons.

Views of the deserted-looking streets in Mangalore

Since the curfew was announced suddenly, people were not at all prepared for this.  Although it was imposed on Friday night, the police started announcements around city only on Saturday morning. There are not enough food items stored within most of the houses.  People are struggling to get the food and other basic things.  Even the police themselves are struggling to get eatables, tea or coffee.  Some medical shops are also closed since the staff could not attend. Same is the case with the milk supply vehicles.

Ready for Rapid Action in any contingency

In essence, the entire city has come to a standstill.  As per police sources, the curfew will continue for the entire day.  DGP B S Sial told the presspersons that situation will be reviewed in the evening and depending on the situation further action will be announced.

If there is some improvement, then there are chances that curfew will be lifted for couple of hours before imposing it more night hours.

Mangalore, Oct 7: While the prelude for violence was written 3 days ago, the ending seems not be coming in the near future.  For the first time in many years, the earlier instance being the infamous Suratkal Riots in 1998, the city has come to such a standstill.

A small section of the society is hell bent on turning the district into furnace of hate while majority people still want to lead a harmonious, peaceful and cordial life.

This is what very much evident with kind of sporadic violence that continuously going on in the city and its surroundings. The administration and the police force have done their best to put an end to violence spree.

One can imagine the spate of the police who have been putting in all their energies forgetting food, sleep and even family commitments to control the situation.  District SP has been in the forefront of the mission.

But finally they have found that nothing but curfew is the answer for the present situation.  So as announced in the night, curfew has been extended to Mangalore city limits.  Police are forcing everyone to go indoors.

So is no one and nothing but police on the streets. Anyone who violates this, irrespective of caste and creed, religion, sex is caned. There is no mercy whatsoever to anyone.

Perhaps this is the only solution in present circumstances. The police and district administration are keeping a vigilant eye on each and every happening.
