Pacific Islands Forum revokes Fiji suspension

Suva, Oct 24 (IANS) The Pacific Islands Forum has revoked a ban imposed on Fiji, media reported Friday.

The forum suspended Fiji from the group May 2, 2009 on grounds that the country failed to announce the date for the general election.

The ban was lifted Oct 22, Fiji Times reported.

"I requested the forum secretariat to deliver my letter addressed to Prime Minister Bainimarama conveying the decision of the forum to fully lift the suspension on Fiji from the forum," said Pacific Islands Forum president Palau Tommy Remengesau Jr.

The Pacific Islands Forum is a group of 16 independent and self-governing states.
