A prime minister's assassination recalled

By Tarun Basu
New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS): Thirty years later, the 90-year-old doctor remembers the event as if it was just the other day.

"I had left after chatting with her, like I used to do every morning after a routine check-up," said Dr K.P. Mathur, of his patient of 18 years, prime minister Indira Gandhi.

"But within 20 minutes I had to come back after getting an urgent call from the office. She had been shot."

Sitting in his modest East Delhi residence, Mathur, slightly bent with age, a little hard of hearing but upright with memory, recalls vividly the morning of Oct 31, 1984, the day that shook India and whose shock reverberated for the next three days, leading to the worst orgy of killings and communal hatred since probably the 1947 partition of the subcontinent.

"I had gone to her 1, Safdarjung Road residence as usual, the routine I had been following every day of the week," said Mathur to IANS as he sought to piece together fragments of his distintegrating memory for the fateful day in his and the nation's life.

"Indira Gandhi was her usual cheerful self even as make-up artists from Doordarshan prepared for her interview with Peter Ustinov who, along with his crew, were waiting in the adjoining 1, Akbar Road office.

"She talked of this and that, including how President Reagan prepared for his TV appearances, what I read on the flight back from Bhubaneswar where the PM had gone to address a political rally, and even remembered how my younger daughter had topped in her high school exams.

"She then went into the adjoining room, told her valet Nathu Ram about her evening programme, including that she has to go to the airport to receive President Zail Singh, who was returning from a foreign tour, asked us to join her for tea and then left for the interview.”

Mathur recalled how he also left after that, driving out the car from the residence himself and headed for Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, just 10 minutes' drive in those days, where he was the medical superintendent.

He had barely parked when his secretary came rushing to say there was an urgent call from the Prime Minister's House (there were no mobile phones then) that there was some shooting and probably the prime minister had been hit.

"I immediately got into my car and drove back, only to find complete disorder having descended on the residence where there was complete order and functional equilibrium just a little while ago," recounted Mathur to IANS.

Guards were running helter-skelter, with one guard shouting incoherently that "she has been shot, she has been shot!"

It was only when Mathur went inside the compound that he realised what had happened.

Two of her Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, who were manning the wicker gate that separated her residence at 1, Safdarjung Road from her office at 1, Akbar Road, sprayed her with bullets from their automatic weapons as soon as she stepped across it. She came down in a pool of spurting blood, the crackle of guns that punctured the tranquil morning air had her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi come running out of her house in her nightgown, shouting "Mummy, Mummy!"

After initial pandemonium (there were no elite Special Protection Group then for the prime minister), a limp Indira Gandhi was put in her white Ambassador car, her head cradled in the arms of Sonia, and rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), about five kilometres away.

Recalled Mathur: "When I reached AIIMS, I saw her lying on a stretcher, her body drenched in blood. I felt her pulse, and knew she was no more."

Doctors were still trying to revive her and para-medics were rushing in bringing bottles of blood. "Everyone knew it was all over, but no one wanted to believe it."

Slowly her senior aides like P.C. Alexander, principal secretary to the prime minister, arrived, and discussions reluctantly veered to government and constitutional matters and options before the nation.

Mathur says Indira Gandhi had a premonition of her death and used to talk of death and political violence in the weeks leading up to her assassination.

In Bhubaneswar, the evening before, on Oct 30, she said: "I am here today; I may not be here tomorrow... I do not care whether I live or die. I have lived a long life and I am proud that I spent the whole of my life in the service of my people... I shall continue to serve until my last breath and when I die, I can say, that every drop of my blood will invigorate India and strengthen it."

Mathur, who said he had not missed a day seeing Indira Gandhi, whether she was in or out of power, for the 18 years he was with her, and that "without any appointment letter", thinks she will be remembered for her genuine concern for the poor, the measures she took towards a more equitable society, for the way she engineered the creation of Bangladesh, for the way she returned to power in January 1980 after her stunning March 1977 electoral defeat.

"She was a very good, simple, informed, charming, well-meaning, helpful and a caring person," reminisced Mathur about his former patient who, from being just a former prime minister's daughter rose to become one of the world's most powerful and admired leaders of her time and even took stewardship in 1983 of the then powerful Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) of countries that were aligned with neither the western or eastern blocs and wanted to retain their strategic and functional independence.

But her death unleashed forces that she had fought against and the principles of secularism, religious tolerance and communal amity that she had sought to uphold.

Incensed by her killing by two Sikhs, organised mobs, backed by her Congress party, roamed the streets of Delhi and a few other cities, pulled Sikhs out of homes, shops and vehicles, beat them up and set them on fire in public view with police nowhere to be seen. Sikh homes and commercial establishments were burnt to cinder.

Close to 3,000 Sikhs were killed, mostly in Delhi, an incident that was dismissed by Indira Gandhi's son and successor, Rajiv Gandhi, with the words: "When a big tree falls, the earth shakes." The army finally moved in on the evening of Nov 2 to restore order. But by then Delhi had burnt in a way that left permanent scars on the collective psyche of a nation.

I never come across in my entire life an another powerful lady like Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi. She has demonstrated the world the capabilities of a woman.

The landmark Land Reform Act, though passed in 1965 had not teeth to implement in every States. It was Mrs. Gandhi with absolute majority in Congress issued strict orders to States to implement the Act with relevant rules.

In Karnataka with the help of then CM Devaraj Urs, she made sure all landless agricultural laborers became the owners of the land. Today, because of increased land value, the once poor agricultural laborer (or his generation) are multi-millionaires. It is the fruits of hard work for generation.
This is one of the examples for social justice.

Besides, nationalization of banks and other public sector companies and implementing job quota for backward class has uplifted many families from the poverty.

The underground explosion of Nuclear Bomb and formation of Bangladesh without the support of western country, especially the USA,was a slap on the face for President Nixon and Henry Kissinger, who used to call her "A witch of the east"

From small town in India to a great nation of the West, she will be honored as one of the most powerful women ever lived in the world in the recent history.

My humble respects to a great lady and a of tear in her remembrance.

It is always easy to sit in front of keyboard and screen and question the actions and strategies of one of the professional armies of the world.
Just curios what qualification/experience you have in this field to make such a comment.
In my view it was clear message to all to not mess with the integrity of India. Really gutsy.

Look what happened after her. Terrorists made mockery of Indian government in Kandahar episode.

She was brave PM and only congressi I liked probably.. :)

she had a colorful life, very naughty since her school days, never got much happiness from her philandering husband, but SHE WAS FIERCE NAIONALIST and was SUPERB as a LADY!

at that time, she was for Soviet Model, and probably was good for those days, which failed later..

she should have also settled kashmir issues, which became bigg mess in later part of 80s, thanks to her ill advised son, Rajiv!

The operation Blue star, was a difficult decision to make. reason is, these khalistani terrorist were holed up inside the golden temple and they had food and water, as long as they wished to live.. so there was nothing like , a lifeline that can be stopped and starve them to death! ... and Bhindranwale was dangerous, so her "TANK THEM!!" was probably only solution? I dont know!

If a Terrorist demanding independence of Kashmir from India hides in Somnath Temple or Jamma Masjid Mosque or Delhi Cathedral Church with AK 47s and Grenades and threatens to kill innocent civilians there, I'm sure even Modiji would not hesitate to take strict action against the perpetrators by force, and the armed forced entering the Holy place would not be armed with Pillow cases, The sooner the THreat is nullified.... the better, There are millions in India who see strict action as Religion insulting in one way or another. Appeasement of this will not serve any purpose. What Shrimati Indiraji had done was necessary, it was bad, but necessary

We , my parents and I were on the way to Chennai on that fateful day and our train halted at Jolarpet junction for more than 6 hours. It was as only very late evening that the train proceeded to Madras after a 6 hour halt at Jolarpet. When we reached Madras junction, it was like a Ghost Station and so was the town with no taxis/autos . We could fortunately get a cycle richkshaw who charged us a bomb to ferry us to Maris Hotel in the city . The whole of Tamil Nadu was on a bund and everything had come to a stand still.

Indeed a huge tree had been uprooted and the entire Country was rudely shaken as if by a Earthquake.

One should look positively and admire the courage exhibited by Indira Gandhi and the respect she commanded far and wide is borne by the fact that almost all the great National heads of that era attended her funeral. She was indeed a leader of the masses. Her wrong doings which proved to be her nemesis were overshadowed by her numerous achievements. Let us salute this great iron lady and may her soul Rest In Peace.

GOLDEN TEMPLE is famous religious place of Sikhs.

Using bombs, arms & ammunition inside a RELIGIOUS PLACE was absolutely wrong.

Golden temple has only one entry and one exit. Is it difficult to catch Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale who was hiding there in such a scenario? Is it INDO-PAK border to use the military weapons inside temple?

She had hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs by showing her EGO and POWER on Sikhs. And off course it was her preparation for 1985 election and tell people that it was her achievement.

She should have used military weapons in Pakistan border, not inside a temple. Finally her FALSE EGO killed her.

Dinesh Poojary, if it wasn't Indira Gandhi, there would have been khalistan, one more pin in the a$$ of India. A religious place is used for worship not to store arms of mass destruction. The Golden temple lost its sanctity, the moment when the sikh militants stored the weapons, not when the army stormed it. Also don't try to be over smart. FYI, a building which has fewer entrances is always difficult to storm in, than the one having more entrances, also it is very easy to guard from inside. If it happened during Indira Gandhi's time we would have parceled the dead bodies of the terrorists to Kandahar, in fact the hijacking episode would have been ended in Amritsar itself. Don't relate her with the sikh massacre, which took place after her death. Respects to her. May her soul rest in peace.

Throughout the night of October 31 and morning of November 1, Congress leaders met the local supporters to distribute money and weapons. 100 rupee notes and bottles of liquor were handed out to the mob. It is also said that Delhi police kept its 'eyes closed' during the riot as it was pre-planned. On October 31, Congress party officials provided the mob with voter lists and ration lists. The lists were used to find the location of Sikh homes and business, Without the lists, it would have been an impossible task to locate the Sikhs.

They killed 3000 innocent sikhs even though they have not committed any small crime. How can DONGIS justify this?

The sin of killing humans for no reasons had cost her life.

    ...But for a few controversies
surrounding her, Indira Gandhiji was a born leader.
The leaders of today are nowhere near her. The dignity of leadership and the aura surrounding her those times was to be seen to be believed. India sorely misses her leadership qualities especially on foreign policy matters and even when petty neighbours seem to 'roar' on us. Indiraji knew how to 'tame' everybody.
May her soul rest in peace.
