Dubai, Nov 12: India held on to fourth place, only a point behind Pakistan, in the latest LG ICC Test rankings.
Inzamam-ul-Haq's team will now look to consolidate their position in the three-match home Test series against the West Indies, which began at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.
India, who have 111 rating points, will try to get back to winning ways on the tour to South Africa after recent disappointments in the shorter version of the game.
Australia head the rankings with 130 points, 11 ahead of nearest challengers England, who would hope to bridge the gap when they take on their arch-rivals in the upcoming Ashes series.
As far as the individual rankings are concerned, India has only one batsman and one bowler in the top 10 lists.
Skipper Rahul Dravid follows his Australian counterpart Ricky Ponting in second spot in the batting charts, while his Karnataka team-mate Anil Kumble is the highest ranked Indian bowler coming in at number six.
That list is headed by spin magician Muttiah Muralitharan, ahead of South Africa's Makhaya Ntini.
The all-rounders list is topped by South African Jacques Kallis ahead of Andrew Flintoff of England. Irfan Pathan comes in at number five.
