Mangaluru: RTA decides to revise bus fares twice a year

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 21: Taking into account frequent requests received from bus owners to revise and hike the bus fares, citing volatile prices of diesel and spare parts, chairman of regional transport authority (RTA) and deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, A B Ibrahim, announced that it has been decided to revise bus fares twice a year with a gap of six months in between.

He gave this information at the meeting of RTA held in the office of the deputy commissioner on Thursday November 20.

The DC made the above announcement after workers of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and others pointed out that bus owners had not brought down bus fares even after diesel prices fell.

Resisting demand for downward revision of bus fares, president of Canara Bus Operators Union,Rajavarma Ballal, said that diesel prices alone cannot be sole factors for reducing fares. He said cost of spare parts keep going up now and then. He also stated that bus fares go up only once although diesel prices undergo frequent revisions. He therefore felt that the demand to reduce fares has no justification.

Though DC & RTO are supreme authorities to decide the changes still they are rely on replies and clarifications from bus owners. Bus owners give their readymade and brain washing answers whenever the public express their grievances. Administration blindly accept their clarifinations and not of the public. That means there is a deep understanding between the bus owners, Politicians and officials. Everybody knows that Haleangadi is centre between Mulki & Surathkal to stop express buses but there is no stop at Haleangadi instead there are so many stops in 1km distance from both Mulki & Surathkal. There is no half stage charges, no spot disbursement of compensation by the owners for victims, no free pass till 7th standard students, no concession for patients and senior citizens, no one day pass system as Bangalore etc., in pvt buses as KSRTC. As the attendance of public is very less in RTA meeting bus owners are dominating and taking advantage. They should think that they are only bus owners and not the owners of the road. Govt., has to immediately take decision to put KSRTC buses in DK & Udupi as other parts of the state.

As many citizens commented remove all the private busses in Karnataka and introduce Govt. owned busses. It's not the ticket price which bothers the citizens, but quality of service which matters, which will also reduce accidents and rash driving and goondaism by private bus operators.
