New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): A Swedish minister Tuesday said his country was keen to work with India in healthcare and suggested that Indian healthcare institutions can make New Delhi a global medical hub.
"Sweden is eager to work further with India to set up an efficient healthcare system. There is great potential in Indian healthcare institutions to make India a medical hub of the world," said Swedish Healthcare, Public Health and Sports Minister Gabriel Wikstrom.
He was speaking at a press conference at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.
Wikstrom, along with a 55-member delegation, is on a three-day visit to India to attend the celebrations of five years of cooperation in the field of healthcare and public health. The MoU was signed in 2009.
Wikstrom met Health Minister J.P. Nadda Monday and discussed how the two countries could work together to strengthen medical services.
Sweden is one of the world's most medically developed nations and is ranked 12th globally by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in medical advancement.
"I am impressed with the work done by the health ministry of India in terms of the recent developments in the field of medical services," said Wikstrom.
AIIMS director M.C. Misra said: "Senior citizen healthcare and maternity and child healthcare are some of the major areas that need to be looked at right now."
He announced that AIIMS will set up a new building for maternity and child healthcare.
"Areas such as cancer research and trauma care research will benefit from a collaboration between India and Sweden," Misra told IANS.
"Such collaborations are the easiest way to gain expertise and technologies," Misra added.
