London, Nov 29 (IANS): A historic 18th century tapestry that was looted by the Nazis during World War II and was kept at the University of Sheffield in Britain for over 50 years will return to its original home in France.
The tapestry, which shows Diana rescuing Arethusa from Alpheus, was made by the famous Beauvais factory in France in the 1720s, specially for the Winter Salon of the newly built Chateau at Versainville in Normandy.
It will be returned at a formal ceremony attended by the British ambassador.
The original frame has been standing empty since the tapestry was stolen by the Nazis.
The tapestry will return not only to its home country but to the very frame in the room for which it was made.
Two other tapestries are still missing and their frames remain empty in the hope that they may be traced one day.
