Mangalore, Nov 27: A two-day state-level seminar on ‘Girl Child and Education’ was organized by Mangalore University Women Research Centre, Magu Madhura Kalike Mangalore, District Training and Education Institution – Public Education Campaign and DEEDS Mangalore on Monday November 27 at CODP, Nanthoor here.  

Director of the Department of Women and Development Govt of Karnataka, A K Monnappa inaugurated the function.

The inauguration was an unusual one. Young girls and others in the gathering took an oath read out by Monnappa, against giving and taking dowry.

Speaking on the occasion, Monnappa mentioned the various schemes that the government has introduced for the welfare of Women. He stressed on the prevalence of Child trafficking and domestic violence encountered by women. He added that problems like Devdasi system and child marriage still exist in the state.

He enlightened the gathering on the ‘Prevention of Child and Women Trafficking’ a UNICEF supported attempt which will be one of the key aspects in the next five year plan.

Dean of the Kalanikaya Mangalore University, B Surendra Rao said in his Presidential address that today girls outnumber boys in getting admissions into colleges and universities. There has been a shift in that aspect but has there been a shift in the attitude of the society is the question to be asked.

He stressed on the hazards of the still-existing dowry system and said that ‘Dowry is not dead…Dowry deaths are taking place’.

Director of the National Institute for Advisory Studies, Shanta Mohan and Director of the Magu Madhura Kalike, N Hameed was also present on the occasion.
