Beltangady, Dec 6: It was lesson of sorts to the district administration when the residents of the taluk gathered in huge numbers to lay a road between Didupe and Yelaneer here.
Following this incident, the forest department officials allegedly arrested innocents resulting in mob barging into the department office on Tuesday December 5.
Nearly a thousand people dug the place and laid the road. Apparently, the there is a mud road between Didupe and Yelaneer which has not been repaired for several years and was closed to traffic due to its proximity to the sanctuary. This meant that the residents had to travel nearly 127 km to reach the taluk headquarters, a big convenience as the actual distance between Didupe and Yelaneer is only 10 km.
The forest department raided the spot and allegedly arrested six people and also seized some vehicles.
The mob was led by district JDS president Vasant Bangera.
