Mangalore, Dec 9: The Judicial Magistrate First Class court judge K.S. Vijay Kumar on Friday convicted a `senior' Indian Administrative Service officer and his `assistant' to six months imprisonment. The judge also fined them Rs. 2,000 each after finding them guilty of cheating by impersonation.

Subramanya Sharma, a `Joint Secretary of 1986 batch' and Nagraj, his `personal assistant', are the person convicted.

Suspicious identity

Subramanya Sharma, a `Joint Secretary of 1986 batch' and Nagraj, his `personal assistant', were nabbed at the Circuit House here on September 3 when Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda, got suspicious about the genuineness of their identity.

Mr. Dayananda, who searched the website of Union Government for details on this `officer', could not find his name there. The SP also made further enquiries with 1986 batch IAS/ IPS officers in the State and confirmed that the person was an impostor.
 
Background

Sharma, originally from Andhra Pradesh, was settled in Delhi and was a private company employee. Nagraj was a `room boy' at a lodging facility in Shirdi. Chandrashekar K.M., Mangalore East Circle Police Inspector, had filed the chargesheet before the court. Sharma and Nagaraj, who had been extended facilities due to the officers of their ranks, were convicted under sections 170 and 419 of Indian Penal Code read with section 34.
