Udupi, Dec 14: Ace swimmer Gopal Kharvi who has many firsts under his belt is now all set to scale another peak when he tries to swim in the deep sea with his hands and legs secured with handcuffs. He is all set to scale this new peak on Sunday December 17 from St Mary's Island to Malpe beach near here. He will embark on his mission at 6.30 am.
Gopal Kharvi (30) is the son of Nagesh Kharvi, a resident of Kodi Kanyana of Sastan near Brahmavar here. Long distance swimming has been his passion for long. Playing with the mighty waves and turbulent sea is his favourite pass-time.
In November 2003 he shot to fame after covering 40 kilometres of distance in Arabian Sea in 6 hours. He had begun his journey from estuary at Hangarkatta and reached Mattu shore near Katapadi in 6 hours. Later he challenged the raging waves once again in December 2004 when he swam 80 kilometres distance between Gangolli and Malpe via Hangarkatta estuary in eleven and half hours.
He has been honoured by various orgizations and even administrations for his rare and daring achievements. Prominent among them is the Udupi district-level Rajyotsava award.
