Mangalore, Dec 15: Culture is not what we inherits from our old generation but it means how we live today, said Prof Surendra Rao, of history department of Mangalore University.
He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day seminar on "Dakshina Kannada on the Threshold of the 21st Century- Economic, Social and Cultural Changes" here at the seminar Hall of Roshini Nilaya School of Social Work on Friday December 15 morning.
While talking about commercialization he said that today education and health are very much commercialized in its nature and it is impossible to up root oneself away completely from the clutches of commercialization.
Writer Amrith Someshwar in his presidential address said “it is saddening to notice that how a land of intellectuals has landed into be a land for communal conflicts ".
"The ever increasing number of temples, churches and mosques are telling a completely different story of growing intolerance among the religious groups. At this juncture it is always better to put forth a question in front of each one of us as 'What went wrong with our culture?' This self realization will help to introspect oneself," he added.
Nearly 200 delegates including environmentalists, representatives of NGOs, writer and academicians are expected to participate in the two-day seminar. Fr John Fernandes, convener of Chair in Christianity was present on the dais.
The workshop has jointly been organized by social justice forum and Mangalore diocesan Chair in Christianity.
