Madikeri, Jan 15: A police van carrying an under-trial prisoner to Mysuru after producing him for hearing in a court at Udupi met with an accident on Wednesday January 14.
It is said that a container truck coming from the opposite direction hit the police van at Jodupal in Devarakolli village in the taluk, resulting in the death of Chandrappa (48), driver of the police van.
Chandrappa, who belongs to a police station in Mysuru, died in the accident. Four constables, Robert, H T Devaraj, Girish and Sathish,were treated at the district government hospital here.
The prisoner, Sudhir Devadiga, was taken into custody by the local police.
