Mangaluru, Jan 21: A workshop on effective implementation of tobacco control laws in Karnataka by capacity building and monitoring was conducted in the police community hall in the city on Wednesday January 21.

The gathering was welcomed by Dr M Ramakrishna Rao, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer.

"Globally, 50 lakh people die due to consumption of tobacco of which 10 lakh deaths are from India. Laws should be strictly enforced in the vicinity of schools, colleges and hospitals. Most importantly awareness on the adverse effects of tobacco should be created,” said A B Ibrahim Deputy Commissioner after the inauguration.

He explained about the hurdles faced by the officers in enforcing the Control of Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). He also said that organizations and officers should take initiative in creating public awareness on tobacco.

Dr Rana J Singh Technical Advisor, The Union, South-East Asia office, New Dehli said that "Tobacco is a big problem in the society. More than 1 crore people in Karnataka use tobacco. 85% of tuberculosis cases can be cured but 5% of cancer cases caused due to consumption of tobacco cannot be cured and is a big challenge."

"Though the government is spending money to enforce the control of tobacco products act (COTPA) the tobacco industries are spending a huge amount of money, more than the budget of the government to promote their tobacco products. Every department should self enforce this act in public and private sectors,” he added.

Dr Rajeshwari Devi district surgeon of Wenlock hospital and Dr Chandra Kiran were present.
