Colombo, Feb 25 (IANS): The Sri Lankan government will present key constitutional reform proposals to parliament next month, a political party leader said Wednesday.
Leader of the People's Liberation Front, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said the National Executive Council has decided to submit the proposals to the parliament, Xinhua news agency reported.
The National Executive Council consists of leaders from several political parties, most of which supported President Maithripala Sirisena at the elections.
Dissanayake said the proposals will include amendments to the constitution in order to curb presidential powers, which was a key promise by Sirisena during his election campaign.
The People's Liberation Front leader said the 19th Amendment to the constitution, which will look at bringing the much awaited constitutional reforms, will also look to establish independent commissions.
