Revoke ban on BBC documentary: Editors Guild of India

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI): Editors Guild of India today appealed to the government to revoke the ban on the telecast of the BBC documentary, depicting the aftermath of the brutal gangrape and murder of Nirbhaya in 2012, saying the move was "wholly unwarranted."

The Guild said in a statement here that the documentary, 'Storyville: India's daughter', portrayed the courage, sensibility and liberal outlook of a family traumatised by the brutality inflicted on their daughter, the continuing shameful attitudes towards women among the convict as well as the educated, including lawyers.

It said their rationale that the ban was in the interests of justice and public order as the film "created a situation of tension and fear amongst women" and the convicts would use the media to further his case in the appeal that was subjudice, seems to be an after-thought.

The Guild appealed to the Central Government to revoke the ban forthwith and enable the people to view the positive and powerful documentary touching on the freedom, dignity and safety of women.

The documentary includes an interview conducted by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin and BBC, of Mukesh Singh, the driver of the bus in which the 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gangraped by six men on December 16, 2012. Mukesh has made derogatory statements against women in the documentary.

Ban on 'India's Daughter' triggers outrage, dissent

New Delhi: March 6 (DHNS) : The ban on controversial documentary “India’s Daughter” on Thursday provoked strong outrage and raised questions on the restrictions imposed on its viewing on grounds that it was giving undue publicity to a rapist and that it would affect the image of the country.

In actions that could be termed hyperactive, the government moved against the documentary on the December 16 Delhi gang-rape victim by getting a court order restraining its telecast in India besides trying to stall its international release and forcing YouTube to remove video links.

Many feel that the government action and the outrage against the documentary directed by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin are not in the right spirit and leads to avoiding the critical question of approach towards women. Though there was a ban, many people managed to watch the documentary online after the BBC outsmarted the Centre
by telecasting it on Wednesday night instead of the scheduled March 8 screening.

“I have seen the documentary. It is powerful and moving. It does not sensationalise anything. This is the fourth time that the government has banned a documentary without viewing it,” Brinda Karat, CPM Politbureau member, said. “Everyone should watch the film. If a man can speak like that in jail, imagine what he would say if he was walking free. The documentary exposes what is happening,” the victim’s father said.

The campaign by Times Now against rival NDTV, which had the rights to telecast the documentary in India, said that the documentary is “voyeuristic” and against “all norms of journalism”, triggering a frenzy against it.

Sonia Singh, managing editor of NDTV, said the news channel has “absolutely no link” to the content or making of the film. Singh, whose husband R P N Singh was minister of state for Home in the UPA-II regime, said neither NDTV nor she helped Udwin get permission for interviewing Mukesh, one of the convicts, in Tihar jail.

Udwin approached “NDTV only 4 weeks ago saying that the BBC had cleared her sharing it with NDTV because this is a global initiative in 7 countries. It is only after we carefully vetted all her legal clearances plus editorially discussed this that we agreed to be partners, last week,” she said.

The controversy also echoed in Parliament on Wednesday when a number of women parliamentarians demanded action on the documentary. However, nominated MPs Anu Agha and Javed Akthar sounded a different note when they expressed opinion against the ban.

“Suggesting death penalty or banning this movie is not the answer. Any time there is a rape, blame is put on the woman, that she was indecently dressed and she provoked the men. They are not just the views of the man in the prison, they are the views of many men in India. Let us be aware of it and let us not pretend that all is well,” Agha said.
“It is good that this documentary has been made so that crores of Indian men will know that they think like the rapist. If they feel that this is wrong, then they will have to change their thinking,” Akthar said.

Its the people who vote in MPs are responsible for these MPs to be MPs. In the west there is scrutiny , laws are strict , yet there are cases MPs with sex allegations, but once exposed they are being dealt with in order to hold power by the ruling party by being transparent and clean. But in India ruling party accommodates criminal background MPs to form alliances, like Man Mohan singh did in UPA to hold power. Something is drastically wrong with the electoral system in India.
women are oppressed in the work environment by not paying them equal and giving them positions of power as compared to men world over including wealthy economies.
Womens movement in the west, is an indication by itself that they are oppressed. They are oppressed and ill-treated thats why there are very high divorce rates in the west as an example. Social fabric is in turmoil.
What happens in India is not restricted to India only, it happens everywhere, just check the stats of western countries.
Sexual violence in university campuses is huge in the west but its been kept under raps because of reputation being spoiled and to attract admissions.

Ad, First thing is with my qualification, I can move anywhere. Second thing is I did not say there is no racism in Australia but no one dared to discriminate me. Thirdly I did not say that there is no sexual harassment in the west or Australia but I have yet to find a rapist who complaints that his victim should just allow rape but should not protest and she should not be out in the public at night. You need to know a lot about India before talking about outside or your knowledge about the west. I lived in India for enough years to experience that discrimination. What you think, the people of north treat the people of South equally?? You are still a Madrasi for Shiv Sena and Mararastrian. Ask great singer like Yesudas and great actor like Kamal Hasan about this discrimination with South and North. Ask people from North-East how they are treated in Delhi. Don't preach too much without first hand experience. Ask yourself how you treat if someone from one of the Western country comes to work along with you in Mangalore. Will you or the society treat him without discriminating? What Mangaloreans think about Mallus taking all the jobs? What Kannadigas of Bangalore thinks Tamilians and Andhraites talking the jobs? racism in some form exists everywhere. You have to live with it. If you don't like it, then do not leave your home town ever. BTW, see Ashwin Suratkal's comment somewhere and answer him..good luck

@ad.. your quote: "i have a wealth of information abt western countries perhaps you would know in your lifetime" Is that information from Google, friends or first hand ?? Your own eyes can fool you mate..When I moved from UK to Aus, Poms said Aussies are racist and I am here for 2 years and I have not experienced any. You live and experience , don't judge from the information what you get from media. I know some peole who have been to India for a short holidays but claim that they know everything about India. I tell them a life time is not enough to know everything about India which is so diverse. Media has to make everything interesting. Looks like you're not watching any Bollywood movies these days which reflects any Indian culture (most of them even not shoot in India as if India dont have any good scenery)

Also the government hasn't banned it airing on "YouTube" because the government doesn't own YouTube. It can only ask Indian internet providers to block it.

i watched the BBC documentary on YouTube and would request all to see it before it disappears from YouTube.

    1. Times Now channel's Arnab Goswami seems to oppose this only because of commercial reasons. NDTV was supposed to show this documentary. Times Now actively supports the Bollywood's ugly sexist "comedy" show which in fact affects the minds of youngsters and in the name of "free speech" actually creates rapist mind sets.

    2. The BBC documentary is no at all voyeuristic. It does not sensationalize the rape story. Instead it holds a mirror to the backward mind sets of some males in India. Actually every Indian male should be encouraged to watch this documentary, this in itself may have a big effect on reducing rapes in India.

    3. The Government's ban on showing this documentary is ill conceived and really foolish.

    4. Most of the people who have opposed this documentary have either not actually seen the program or do not want anyone to see the reality of Indian male thinking.

..there is a thanks note to NDTV for archives of media snippets..

Brinda Karat who is advocating "free speech" today, is Prannoy's wife's sister!... the whole show was recorded in oct 2013, this was done to show congress in good, in coming delhi and general eleciton.. with Sonia Ganhdi and Sheila Dixit giving sermons! ,.... same people who took nirbhaya to Singapore, cos if she had died there would have been a major Riot like situation, with emotional youth which was protesting. ..but ultimately when the documentary was complete, SHEILA HAD LOST BADLY! and there was no point.. hence UPA didnt give permisssion to show that... after delhi court ban, you at NDTV still wanted to show it? why? "when the communists speak of "free speech"" I just suspect, ok!

Ok, dont you know "victim of rape" identiti, name, photograph, should not be shown, no matter whose permission you have?

what was the point here..? from 2013 - 2015,, if you took 2 yrs to show the documentary? why was the gap? ...the convicts have a death penalty on their head already! you want them to be HANGED by now.. or they should go for a higher appeal, as law provided them that right?... or was the whole exercise, to rub nirbhaya's parents wounds and make more money and save the "juvenile"?

all these guys have concealed the identity of the 'JUVENILE" rapist! and he is set to get released in december! I am sure, congress gave permission, only to save this rapist as he is a vote bank! his parents and rest were not shown!

even the girls friend was no interviewed! ..and some tutotr was parrot the lines given!... BBC wanted to prtray the poverty, and every one as rapist! and they have been succesful. I will be really happy if they stop coming to India, and I hope they get to meet those Paedophile whites, who have escaped from India recently! DOnt want to add to already wasteful men, with such nasty tourists either!

He talks the same language as that of some of the politicians statements like a girl/woman should not step out of the house after dusk, ban on usage of mobiles and wearing of jeans, etc. Some outrageous comments that have been made earlier point to the ‘fact’ that consumption of chowmein is the reason for getting the urge to rape!!

What is even more appalling is the mindset of the defense lawyers.

My earlier write up repeated here:

The banning of this documentary is the right thing to do.The BBC has no choice but not to air documentary in India as per government of India directive. They have broad cast this documentary outside of India, that means BBC is not sensitive to this issue and its fall out.

Rapes occur around the world, everyday in schools, houses, public places, why so special in India's rape case to this western author.

More so why it is so special to BBC to air it outside India. BBC is insensitive and wants to create an audience.

Western media wants any meat to publicize and to to gather viewers in such events as if these happen only India.

In most of the western countries such as USA, UK, Canada, France rapes and sexual assaults and sexual violences occur in schools, in homes, in hotels, college campuses and on dates. Can the author create a documentary and publish it in these countries?

Would BBC broad cast these in documentaries.

Have you ever heard of the rapist giving these kind of statement from the jail in other countries as well? You look like having problems with Western Media. How about Indian media? Do they publish someone who is doing social work or they are happy to publish all murder, rape, accidents, politics and cinema gossip. Media want to sell and they do the same job everywhere. We have to maximize the use of it and you're crying now after India's name is spoiled in the International community not because of this documentary but various things like rape of women including tourists, worshiping humans as God, attacks on places of worship, ghar vapsi and various things.
