BCI issues show cause notices to lawyers for anti-women remarks

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI): The Bar Council of India (BCI) late last night issued show cause notices to two lawyers who had appeared for the accused in the December 16 gangrape case for allegedly making derogatory anti-women remarks.

"We have issued the show cause notices to M L Sharma and A P Singh for their alleged remarks made in the (BBC) documentary," BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said.

The lawyers' apex body took the decision around midnight after its executive committee meeting in which it was found that there is a "prima facie" case of professional misconduct against these lawyers.

The notices have been issued under a provision of the advocates act and their licences to practice may be cancelled if BCI is not satisfied with their response.

Meanwhile, advocate Sharma refuted the charge, saying he has said nothing wrong to anybody.

In the controversial BBC documentary on the gang rape, Sharma reportedly said such incidents of rape are bound to happen if girls go out without proper security.

When some two legged animals acting like animals towards the women, it is terribly bewildering. And the defending lawyers trying to find fault with the tortured women for the crime created by their devilish
clients, that make the situation far worse.

These lawyers, did they come to the world through women, or some other way?

It is terribly sad to see, how the women are treated in a massive scale in India as if inferior human beings like slaves and voiceless human beings.

@Roshan Braganza. I am not sure what you mean when you said The Job of the lawyers is to defend their clients in your comment. Defending the client does not mean offending the other party. Being a lawyer one can defend the client without offending anyone. On the note, so many people were against this documentary and we now start seeing how many heads are going to roll as a result of this documentary. The interview also goes against the criminals who are in jail. They should be hanged in-front of their parents/relatives and friends as soon as possible and it will send the message to other upcoming rapists who are in big numbers in our society.

@ Abdul , that lynched man in Nagaland is innocent , unofficial reports confirm there was no tape. Quiet opposite to nirbaya case , the Naga incident has a mix of racism and feminism which advocates mob justice. Its very unhealthy trend in civilised society.

Central govt should amend our existing penal code,at present to prove guilty of accused responsibility lies with prosecution dept means state and police, this should be made reverse means responsibility should go to accused of any crime,as per same he should prove that he has not committed any offence then only we can expect decrease in crime ratio in India,or else same trend of crime keep continue in the society.

Bar council must be really working very hard if they issued show cause notice at mid night. Or are they worried that bar council may be investigated?

Nagaland method should be used on these two lawyers. Vandalize their offices and they should not practice anymore.

I wonder what justified banning the broadcast of 'India's Daughter' in our country. The documentary highlights the environment in which these criminals are bred and the details of the sad events that took place. It leaves us with a deeper sense of sorrow for the victim and her parents & greater hatred and anger for those accused in the crime. As for the two defence lawyers, it would have been best to leave them out from the documentary that is telecast to the rest of the world. They neither had the presentation skills nor the capacity to say anything meaningful.
