India committed 'international suicide' by banning documentary: Udwin

London, Mar 8 (PTI): India committed "international suicide" by banning a documentary on the December 16 Delhi gangrape from screening in the country, the British filmmaker behind the controversial film has said.

Leslee Udwin, the director of 'India's Daughter' also said it was ironical that her purpose of "giving a gift of gratitude" to India has been misinterpreted as "pointing fingers" at the country.

She said: "My whole purpose was to give a gift of gratitude to India, to actually praise India, to single India out as a country that was exemplary in its response to this rape, as a country where one could actually see change beginning.

"The supreme irony is that they are now accusing me of having wanted to point fingers at India, defame India, and it is they who have committed international suicide by banning this film."

Speaking after a screening of the documentary - that has stoked a controversy, with the Indian government banning its telecast last week and asking the video-sharing website YouTube to remove all links to the documentary - Udwin said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would see similar thoughts echoed in the film as his 'Beti Bachao' campaign.

"If (Modi) spent one hour seeing this documentary, he would see his own statements since he got into power reflected in this film.

"The film is saying exactly what he's saying with his 'Beti Bachao' campaign," she said over the weekend.

The documentary - still available online in the UK via BBC's iplayer tool - features an interview of one of four men sentenced to death, Mukesh Singh, for rape, torture and murder of 23-year-old 'Nirbhaya' on a moving bus.

Police said the ban was imposed as comments in the film by one of those convicted of the crime created an atmosphere of "fear and tension" and risked fuelling public anger.

    Suman,

The documentary was about a rape that happened in Delhi. So they did it about that. If a rape happened somewhere else, and if they wanted to make documentary on that then they would have done over in that place.

Yes, rape is a global problem. But the mind set of the society towards rape is different in different places. If a person in west has a rape allegation against him he would not able to contest and get elected in an election. But why does it happen over here in India? Why does the overwhelming blame goes to the victim over here? Why women hesitate to go to the authorities to report it? Why women are treated like a property by men in india? why is it not alright for women to go out at nights? what makes men to harass/molest/rape women if they are out at night?

No lawyer would dare to say the things like burning his own daughter like the lawyer in the documentary said and get away with it in a western world.

Just commenting hang/kill/castrate the rapist wont stop the rapes from happening. The mentality needs to be changed from ground up.

Question is, why was he interviewed? Is he a celebrity? a politician? an activist? or a social worker?

For god's sake this guy is a "RAPIST" and a "MURDERER". No one should be allowed to speak to him.

An arrested petty criminal is not allowed to talk to his family in the local police stations.

This guy has been arrested for rape and murder, then how was this journalist allowed to interview him?

No doubt the incident was brutal and asserting his cruelty as right is male chavinism. But for this every is to be blamed. Our home has become miniscule family. Parents have either one kid or two kids. Dont have time to nurture them properly. More than culture money has become every thing for Indians. Every transaction is analysied on profit angle. In our alma-matter,there is no moral period for students to know about our culture or discipline. Majority of our politicians who make hue and cry are not having any moralality Elderly grandma or grandpa are sent to old age home.Evening prayer before god like bhajans, or chanting enllightening mantras are considered to be old fashioned. Some great western minded scholers proclaim that they will burn BHAGATHGITA in public. They are supported other Scholers that a person who has got PHD on this after studying for 15 years that it is not written by single person. We do not read properly understand what is said in Bhagavathgita and simply pretend that we know every thing about our culture. If the same words are uttered about other religion the same fellows would have been awarded FATWA by the clergies. But our hindu society is toleratent for all types of non sense comments by so called intelligent people. If at all our youth are spoilt one of the reasons is these intelligent populace of India. Secondly the Medias which aggradndise these incidents for their circulations and forget it afterwords. There is know rationale study why our young generation have stooped to this level. In visual Medias all types of blue films are shown and our young boys and girls see this and emulate. Now girls give lot of importance to their physique and have developed exibhitionism. Young adolacent boys are carried away by this. As parents are guilty of not giving attention to mend their children they procure every things on the earth. Naturally boy/ girl do not develop temperment to listen "NO". Thus present complicated society is responsible.

I have seen the documentary and it is factual apart from couple of morons expressing their backward views like if daughter goes out with a boyfriend he would take her outside the house and pour kerosene over her and light it. We are burying our head in sand and pretending that nothing is happening. There are 10 kidnaps of women taking place in Delhi alone and ending up in rape and don't tell us that it is our culture. Women are same as men and have equal rights and freedom like us. It is about three years since it happened and the one of the killer who is blaming the girl without any remorse.

Freedom of speech/expression quite often is used by and large very ively by the public, journalists, reporters and documentary makers of the 'Western world'. Of course there are exceptions.
However, it seems like they are more interested in exposing the truth and reality with relation to 'gender inequality' social discrimination etc. in economically weaker nations than in the wealthy nations of the Western world (include Japan) and Oil rich Gulf countries.
Has the BBC made or telecast any documentary about the ban on women driving vehicles in the KSA ? or about African-American youths being discriminated against by a white dominated police force in the USA ?

I have seen this film and I do not why are people running from reality, as if all this just did not happen.

I could have attached the link, but then nothing would be published. I would very strongly recommend that people watch this film, and some day one day this film will be available. It is an eye opener for all to see the dark side of our society, and if we have to fix the problem, then the first thing is admitting we have a problem and only then we will look for a solution. The rapist have been sentenced to die, but that does not mean there will no longer be rape in India.

Rape takes place in every part of world and prostitution is the oldest known profession. Every 20 minutes a rape is reported in India, how many go unreported God only knows. In some parts of the world rapists are killed too, but that has not stopped rape. In the movie the Chief justice of India is of the opinion that education will eliminate rape, I do not agree. Because, in the West there is 100% education but rape is rampant.

If any others have seen this documentary then let them comment, if not hold your peace.

Also don't waste the police force behind them, we can see 10 to 20 policemen to protect these criminals in jails. Please hang them soon. We are expecting drastic changes from this Government. If not there will be no difference between UPA & the present BJP Government. Kindly do the needful with top priority. Rapes should be stopped at any cost.

We support the Government's ban. It was not right to telecast the interview of one of the criminals/rapists whose comments were as expected third rate and repulsive. The question is who gave this film maker the permission to do that ?

The film maker is now conveniently trying to divert the blame to the Indian Government.
I am not a supporter of the Modi led BJP government but I fully support the Government banning this and similar such films where a voice is given to regressive and repulsive statements from criminals as it will only do harm to India's image internationally.

She says it's a sick society and other parts of world are actually no different. She was painting every indian in the same colour.
India is a country where people worship the female form as shakti. It's not our 'culture' to use rape as a political tool as has been the practice in the rest of the world.
It is the erosion of these values that has lead to this state of our society. But then, it doesn't suit her agenda to show that.
She shows the pervert rapist as a representation of Indian mentality, not those millions who protested against these crimes.

As I said in my earlier comment this documentary would have been a tribute to Nirbhaya. Controversy arose when one of the rapists was allowed to interview, in which he justified his crime stating that the victim shouldn't have resisted his criminal acts. Such controversial one-sided interview coupled with political statements of lawyers should have been censored, thereby allowing the documentary to be shown in the country.

Of course it is a defaming documentary in the international media, but we have no escape. If it was so threat to India, why the authorities even allowed the interview to happen in the prison? Everything in the 54 minutes documentary is the voice of India, and, of course it was forwarded to me by a foreigner!
