Mangaluru, Mar 22: Green Brigades, a group of around 30 friends have launched a campaign to save trees on the road from St Agnes college to Mallikatta junction in city.

It is said that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has plans to cut down the trees on this road to make it a four-lane with a width of 15 meters. As per information, the city corporation has already conducted the survey on the road and has plans to resume work soon.

The road has several trees, which are more than a decade old. The group believes that 15 trees have been targeted.

Green Brigades has demanded that corporation should not cut down trees for developing the road. The group has a facebook page where it has considerable followers. The group claims that it has followers from all sections of the society who are keen on protecting the environment.

The group has discussed the issue with the commissioner of MCC and deputy conservator of forest. They are also planning to submit a memorandums to other authorities urging them to protect the trees on the road.

They have already approached Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo. He has told them that he will take a decision after studying the proposal. Mayor Jacintha Alfred said as she has just taken over, she needs some time to study the issue.
