Two held for cow slaughter under Maha beef ban law

Nashik, Mar 29 (PTI): In the first case registered under the beef ban law in Maharashtra, two persons have been arrested by police in Malegoan for allegedly slaughtering calves.

A case was registered against three persons, three days ago and two of them were tracked down and arrested yesterday, police said.

The duo — Mohammed Rashid Akhtar (36) and Abdul Ahad Mohammed Ishak alias Hamed Lendi (28) were arrested from Munshi Nagar and Saban Nagar localities respectively following a tip, Azad Nagar police inspector Masood Khan said.

They were later produced in a local court and remanded to five-day police custody till March 31, he said.

Police had earlier this week raided a shack in Azad Nagar area, about 90 kms from here and seized two heads of slaughtered calves and 150 kg of beef.

The Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, banning slaughter of bulls and bullocks, was enforced by the BJP led Government on March 4.

Under the law, anyone found selling beef or possessing it can be jailed upto five years and fined Rs 10,000.

Offences have been registered against the accused -Rashid alias Pandya, Hamid alias Lendi and Asif Talathi, under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, police said.

The beef ban has triggered protests from some political and cultural quarters, arguing that it amounted to encroachment on individual choices and food habits of large sections of people, especially minority communities.

However, state government has stood the ground holding that during the national movement Mahatma Gandhi backed total ban on cow slaughter and even now veteran Congress leaders like Motilal Vora supported the cause.

This Law is Double edged Sword.
It would help police to collect "Hafta" to allow beef trade.
It would help BJP government to accuse some Minority people with planted evidence to harass them as well.
A government should focus on development & good governance rather than issue dictats to its citizens what to eat & what not to.
In India more people suffer from malnutrition & to prevent masses from eating their food of choice is draconian rule as well.
BJP's vote share in the Assembly Election is only 27.8%, even with Shiv Sena's 19.4% wouldn't cross 50 %.
Let them have a referendum on this Bill, but in a democracy forcing others by majority is not a true democratic principle, as it represent all the people & it has no right to repress any one.

    Cow slaughter ban is illegal.
Ban this law immediately without wasting the time.

Cow meat is good for health and its meat is legal to eat.

I am for mass slaughter of cows in protest of meeting humans desires of cow meat.

Good that the law is being enforced now, we need to get rid of cow slaughter completely, once that is done it will bring Hindus and other communities together as cow slaughter is something which is dividing the communities, Hindus cannot tolerate cow slaughter anymore

Banning cow slaughter it is fine, we understand. But why ox and bullocks included in this ban and depriving people of their right to eat beef. Allowing cows to roam on the streets of Mumbai and eating trash from the dustbins is ok, then where is your God sentiment gone. You people are hypocrites.
