Mangalore, Mar 4: ‘Patrika Bhavana’, the new own premises of the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Association was inaugurated near the Urwa Church Hall here on Sunday, March 4 morning. Senior retired journalist U Narasimha Rao cut the inaugual ribbon.
The other dignitaries at the inaugural function were Rajya Sabha member N Janardana Poojary who presided over the function, state minister in charge of district B Nagaraj Shetty, mayor Vijaya Arun, ZP president Sushma Janardan, MLA Yogish Bhat, local corporator Venkatesh Achar, MLA Krishna Palemar, state journalists' association presient Venkatesh and general secretary Munjane Satya and others.
Speaking on the occasion, B Nagaraj Shetty said that the media is becoming powerful and thus plays an important part in the development of the nation. He also added that with the use of latest technology, the media is reaching far and wide with clarity in news and speed.
Four retired senior journalists - Malar Jayaram Rai, Ramachandra Rao, U Narasimha Rao and N R Ubhaya were honoured on the occasion. To mark the day a Journalists’ Welfare Fund was launched by B Nagaraj Shetty and the first donation was made by A Shama Rao Foundation Trust with a sum of Rs Rs 10,000.
Also present at the inaugural function were Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association president B Ravindra Shetty, secretary R Ramakrishna, Press Club president K Anand Shetty and the members of the executive committee of the Association.
Ravindra Shetty drew the attention of the public to the four achievements of the association in the past year - insurance and personal accident cover to mediapersons, issuance of authorized 'Press' stickers to vehicles to avoid misuse, welfare fund launched at the function and realization of a long-awaited project of 'Patrika Bhavana'.
Senior journalist Manohar Prasad compered the function. Taranath Kapikad read out the messages. Chidambar Baikampady introduced the four senior colleagues who were honoured.
Special mention was made of the Rs 25-lac grant given by Janardan Poojary from his MP fund and Rs 4-lac each from Lok Sabha member D V Sadananda Gowda and MLA N Yogish Bhat.
District and sessions judge Bharatesh, SP B Dayananda and others were also present on the occasion.
