Mangalore, Mar 8: Five top women achievers, who have excelled in their respective fields and contributed to the general betterment of the society, were honoured on the occasion of the International Women's Day, on Thursday, March 8 morning, in St Agnes College auditorium here.

St Agnes College, a women's college, has been re-accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade in 2005 and has been recognized as one with potential for excellence in 2006.



The honouring of five women achievers added more meaning to the observance of the Women's Day. St Agnes institutions' local manager and HOD Political science was the chief guest and vice principal and HOD Zoology Dr Sr Prem D'Souza was the guest of honour.

The function was jointly organized by the women's cell, human rights education cell and St Agnes Alumnae Association.

St Agnes Alumnae Association secretary Marina Lobo, Women's cell's staff coordinator Deviprabha and human rights education cell's staff coordinator Chandramohan Marathe and others were present on the occasion.

The five women achievers honoured were:










City mayor Vijaya Arun

St Agnes College principal Sr Carmel Rita

Social worker Celine Aranha

KMC's retired gynaecologist Dr Bernardine (Beena) Lobo

and

Anupama Kannada monthly's editor Shahanaz M.

While mayor Vijaya Arun was felicitated by Sr Carmel Rita and Sr Shalini, Sr Prem joined Sr Shalini in honouring the others.

Earlier the function began with an inspirational invocation and a welcome dance. Flavia Sequeira welcomed the gathering. Dr Manjula compered the function and Vidya Shenoy proposed a vote of thanks.



The achievers shared their feelings on the occasion of Women's Day. Vijaya Arum complimented the college on producing top-class women achievers who have made an impact the world over by holding high posts and serving in different fields. Others also expressed their thoughts.

As part of the observance of the day, an interaction on 'Women and Domestic Violence' led by advocate Asha Nayak and another on 'Women and Civic Awareness' led by NGO activist Vidya Dinker were on schedule.
