Mangalore, Mar 10: Mariadas (51), an employee of New Mangalore Port Trust was hacked to death by two unidentified men in front of the New Mangalore Port here on Friday March 9 night.

Mariadas had come to have tea while on duty around 10 in the night.  As he was walking towards canteen outside the Port, two men who arrived on a bike attacked him with sabre.  As a result Mariadas sustained serious injuries in his head, belly and neck.  He fell on the road in a pool of blood.  It was only sometimes later that police arrived on the spot and shifted him to hospital.

He was operated later in the hospital.  However, he succumbed to the injuries in the early hours of Saturday March 10.

Mariadas was the prime accused in the murder of Paladorai which had taken place at Baikampady in the year 2000.  His son and two others were also accused in the same case and were sent to jail.  However, they were released in 2004 after the prosecution's failure to provide substantial witnesses in the case.

Paladorai's son is a rowdy-sheeter and has several cases against him in Tamil Nadu prominent among them being a murder case and two cases of murder attempt.  Though nothing is known about the murder of Mariadas, police suspect the involvement of Paladorai's son Shiva.
