Mangalore, Apr 5: Superintendent of Police B Dayananda has directed the Mangalore City subdivision Deputy Superintendent of Police D Dharmaiah to look into allegation made by the Karnataka State Gold-Silver Workers' Federation about the illegal detention of one of their members by the District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) personnel.
The federation made public its allegation at a press conference here on Wednesday.
B Ramachary, president of the federation, said the DCIB personnel headed by Police Inspector T B Rajanna had on March 18 picked up Jagadish M Shet, member from Sagar in Shimoga district, on the charge of purchasing 30 grams of gold which was reportedly stolen. Ramachary said the DCIB sleuths had not formally arrested Shet in this connection and he was in ‘illegal detention’ since then. Veena, Shet's wife, approached the federation in Bangalore on Tuesday and expressed apprehensions about his well being, he said.
Ramachary alleged that the DCIB personnel had flouted all rules and had not informed either the federation members in Shimoga or the local unit about the detention of Shet.
He alleged that the DCIB personnel had coerced Shet to identify his acquaintances in Kumta and Sagar and "recovered" nearly 2.5 kg of gold jewellery from at least 10 persons in these towns. No acknowledgement was given to the "recovery" made from these jewellers, he charged.
H N Sathyanarayana Rao, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), said he would go through the memorandum received by his office in this regard and take steps based on merits of the case.
