Mangalore, Apr 6: Speakers offered rich tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram at a function organised by the Dakshina Kannada district administration and the zilla panchayat to mark the birth centenary of the leader here on Thursday.
The leadership qualities of Jagjivan Ram and his concern for the welfare of the downtrodden and the weaker sections of society were praised.
Umesh Chandra, Director of Media Resource Centre, Mangalore University, who delivered a lecture on the life and works of Babu Jagjivan Ram, said he was one of the effective and able leaders that independent India had produced.
Describing Jagjivan Ram as a person of honour, Dr. Chandra said one should learn and strive to inculcate values from such leaders.
The nation should remember such leaders who dedicated their lives for the welfare of the weaker sections of society, Dr. Chandra said.
He urged the people to understand the essence of values for which people such as Jagjivan Ram stood for and implement it in their lives. Vijaya Arun, Mayor, who presided over the function, said Jagjivan Ram was a symbol of national integration.
Ranganath Shetty, president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat, inaugurated the function.
