MANGALORE, Apr 8: Authorities of the Department of Health should take care to ensure that all expectant mothers undergo delivery in a medical facility equipped to handle such cases, Minister for Fisheries, Endowment and district in charge B. Nagaraj Shetty has said.

Specific programmes had been drawn up in the National Rural Health Mission in this regard and the authorities of the department should implement them, he said. Inaugurating a function on the occasion of World Health Day here on Saturday, Mr. Shetty said many cases of women delivering children at homes had been reported in Sullia and Belthangady taluks. Directing the authorities to address this issue, he urged them to ensure that expectant mothers got all the care they needed. Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat president Sushma Janardhan, who was the chief guest, said there was lack on information about various health schemes in rural areas. She urged the authorities concerned to redress the issue.

N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, presided over the function. Earlier, Vijaya Arun, Mayor, inaugurated a `jatha'.
