Mangalore: First Rain Claims Two Lives in Udupi

Mangalore / Udupi, Apr 15: The very first rain of the year, eagerly awaited by the residents of the district in view of the unbearable heat and looming water scarcity problem, took its toll of two lives in Udupi district.

Subrahmanya Bhat of Pernankila died when the roof of his house collapsed and he got crushed under it on Saturday night when heavy showers, accompanied by heavy gales, disrupted life in the district.

Mohini (32), wife of Devu Kharvi, resident of Melgangolli lighthouse area, died when a coconut tree came crashin on her. She had just come out into the yard.

Reports are coming in about hundreds of trees having rolled to the ground as a result of powerful gales. Road traffic at Kalmady, Malpe, Kinnimulky, Brahmavar-Herur, Ambagilu and other places was disrupted.

A programme to mark Dr U R Ananthamurthy turning 75 to have been held in MGM College got cancelled. Power shutdown as a result of trees crashing on the lines has also reported from several places.

Elsewhere

Several houses and shops have been damaged in Moodbidri town, Kodangallu, Marpady, Mastikatte and other places. Over 40 houses around Moodbidri need repair on a large scale. MLA Abhayachandra visited the affected areas.

There are reports of heavy rains from Beltangady, Bantwal and Puttur. Power failure has been reported from several places.
