Mangalore, Apr 20: Akshaya Tritiya is the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, Sukla Paksha. Which means that white is the most auspicious colour of the day.
It is the fourth most auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. A day that brings eternal good fortune. Each year, this day is anticipated with enthusiasm, as the most auspicious day to bring Goddess Lakshmi home. And this year, along with gold and silver, buying the white metal – platinum – is considered most auspicious.
Akshaya Tritiya has fallen on 2 days this year, that is, on April 19 and 20. This is after 71 years that Akshaya Tritiya has come on two days. The earlier incidence of this was in 1936.
It is believed that any new venture begun or things bought on this day are blessed with good luck. Hence, the jewel lovers, be it in elders or young ones rush to jewel shops to purchase ornaments of their liking.
Jewel experts say that, nearly 30 kilograms of gold is sold in the city every day. But during Akshaya Tritiya almost 100 kilograms of gold is expected to be sold out.
Though Akshaya Tritiya is auspicious in Hindu calendar, a large numbers of Muslims as well as Christians are found buying gold ornaments in the jewel shops on this day.
Anticipating a big rush, the prime jewelers of the city had begun advance booking almost a week ago for the convenience of the customers. Attractive packages such as valuable gifts on each buying or special offers for advance booking were also available in most of the jewelleries.
Alukkas, leading jewel house of the city which usually operates between 9 am and 8 pm, was open between 7 am and 10.30 pm on Thursday April 19, the first day of Akshaya Tritiya. The shop had also employed 10 more staff to control the ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ crowd. A special counter for gold coins was also opened on this occasion. Almost 500 grams of gold coins were sold by Thursday evening.
When contacted S L Shet Jewelers, the reputed jewellers of city, said that they were expecting three times more business than usual days. Similar was the tale of other jewelers of the city too.
The jewel sellers have ventured into different schemes to attract the buyers. Totally all in all Akshaya Tritiya is proving profitable not only to jewelers but also to those who venture into new business, buy property, house, invest in stock market, mutual funds or fixed deposits etc.
At the same time, whether one agrees or not, a lot of credit again goes to the media for highlighting this occasion with special write-ups, features and pictures.
