Mangalore,  Apr 21: Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical system, is gaining popularity among Mangaloreans as it reinvents to meet expectations of men and women caught in a rat race.

The city, which is renowned for allopathic medical colleges, recently witnessing a steady increase in ayurvedic treatment centres like ‘Panchakarma’ and ‘Soundarya Vardhaka’.

The city has more than a dozen Panchakarma centres which offer ancient Indian medical care with a wide range of services.

Briefing about Panchakarma, eminent ayurvedic physician Dr Hariprasad Suvarna says that the treatment, which can cure many diseases, has two major categories - ‘Shamana’ and ‘Shodhana’. Shamana is treatment of a specific disease with proper medicines.

Whereas, Shodhana has five different branches like ‘vamana’, ‘virechana’, ‘basti’, ‘nasya’ and ‘rakta moksana’, he explains. The treatment in vamana includes intake of particular quantity of medicines with ghee, a massage and dhoomapana.

In nasya treatment, patients are administered medicines through nose. “There has been notable progress in ayurvedic sector in city and more and more people are influenced towards ayurveda,” said Suvarna who has more than 14 years of experience in ayurvedic practice.

Soundarya Vardhaka is another branch of ayurveda which offers total protection of skin from diseases, he explains and adds that certain skin diseases like pimple can easily be cured with ‘mukha lepa’ (face mask).

Hypertension is another complaint which most of the people in cities suffer. Suvarna says the illness can be cured completely with ‘shirodhara’ and ‘shirobhakti’. The course of treatment may vary depending on severity of the case.
