Mangalore, Apr 22: The water level at the catchment of the Tumbe vented dam which supplies drinking water to the city has gone up by two inches on Saturday.

The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), which has its Sarapady dam upstream on the same Netravati river, had been specially requested to release water by the city and district administrations. Until Friday the released water had not reached and the level had been going down alarmingly.

But by Saturday, a marked improvement in the water level was observed.

There were a few showers in the city area on Sunday morning around seven. What the city needs is a good rainfall in the western ghats around Shirady and Uppinangady so that the Kumaradhara and Netravati rivers will flow with vigour. Slight rain in Uppinangady and Dharmasthala areas has resulted in the improvement of the level by two inchea, said water supply sources.

The leakage in the vented dam has been fixed at all points except one with the assistance of MRPL's experts. Contingency steps have been taken to meet with any scarcity situation. Water tankers have been already pressed into service in Mulki and Ullal areas, which are likely to suffer water shortage.
