Mangalore, Apr 25: Udupi district has secured the second place in the Karnataka State SSLC examination held in the month of March 2007 with a total pass percentage of 86.63.

While Chikkodi education district topped the place with 87.25%, Bidar stood last with 49.88%.  The overall pass percentage of 76.32 is a record in past 10 years.

Girsl once again fared better and scored more than boys while rural students outsmarted their urban counterparts.  The rural pass percentage was 76.27 as against urban pass percentage of 72.09.

The coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada which are often referred as education hubs fared better this time around.  While Udupi stood second in the state with total pass percentage of 86.33, Dakshina Kannada climbed up to 5 place this time with total pass percentage of 82.31.  Last year Dakshina Kannada had slipped to 15 place in the state.

Dr Shankarappa, deputy director of public instructions of DK district expressed delight on the results and had special words of appreciation to the hard work of the teachers and students of the district.

Among the students appeared for the exams this time in DK district, 82.31% students have passed. A total of 31,173 students appeared for the examination from the district and 25,661 students cleared the examination.

Girls topped this time too. A total of 15,045 girls appeared for the examination and 12,980 (86.27%) girls have cleared the exams in DK district. A total of 16,128 boys have faced the exams this time and 12,681 (78.62%) cleared.

Totally, 8,23,940 students had appeared for the examination and 5,64,035 have come out with flying colours.  Speaking at a press conference at Bangalore Director of Karnataka State Secondary Education Examination Board (KSSEEB) T M Kumar said that for the first time in the country, the SSLC result has been announced just three weeks after the valuation work began.

According to sources from the SSLC Examination Board, the supplementary examination will be held from May 28. The last date for filing applications is May 4.
