Hyderabad, May 18: A heatwave in southern India in the last 10 days has killed 128 people, mainly beggars and the homeless, officials said on Thursday.
Temperatures in the coastal Andhra Pradesh state have risen to an average of 45°C, touching 49.8°C in two districts.
Severe heat conditions are common in most parts of India around this time before the June-September monsoon rains hit the subcontinent.
Hundreds of heat-related deaths are reported each year especially among the poor.
