Udupi, Aug 6: A tanker driver who caused the deaths of a pregnant woman and others has received a sentence of 1 year rigorous imprisonment with Rs 6,500 fine from the district court.
On June 12 in 2014, the driver of a tanker lorry A S Jalaluddin Shafiq drove his vehicle with high speed and hit an auto rickshaw near Santhekatte petrol pump in Udupi district. Before that he overtook many vehicles recklessly.
The auto rickshaw overturned as a result and the occupants- a pregnant woman, her cousin and another person were injured. Later all the injured persons died in the hospital. Only the auto driver survived with serious injuries. The deceased woman who was 9 months pregnant carried a female child.
A case was registered at Udupi traffic police station and trial was held at JMFC court. The court which heard the case delivered the verdict based on arguments and counter arguments. The court said that it was proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the driver caused the deaths of four people with his reckless driving and sentenced him to one year rigorous punishment of jail and levied a fine of Rs 6,500.
