Mangalore, Jun 5: The judicial system needs to win the trust and confidence of the people and the media, said Supreme Court judge R V Raveendran.

He was speaking at the valedictory of post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations of Mangalore Bar Association held at Town Hall here on Monday June 4.

Lamenting that the judiciary had lost its credibility in the recent past, he called upon the lawyers to re-build the trust of the people such that the media does not get a chance to question the judiciary.

He further said that even banks and telecom companies do not approach the court now due to the delay in passing judgements. Instead they have their own recovery agencies, a move which has given rise to crimes. This is a failure of the judicial system, Raveendran said.

He cited many more cases where the judiciary is no more approached for solving problems. He urged the lawyers to follow ethics and not work for money alone.

Raveendran released a souvenir on the occasion to mark the post-centenary silver jubilee year.

A talk on ‘Role of Bench and Bar in Justice Delivery System’ was delivered by former Chief Justice of Karnataka and Kerala High Courts V S Malimath.

Among those present were state Bar Council chairman Rajendra Desai, district and sessions judge H M Bharatesh, MLCs Blasius D’Souza and Capt Ganesh Karnik, and MLAs N Yogish Bhat and Krishna J Palemar.
