Finally Shiradi Ghat road opens for traffic

Mangaluru, Aug 10 (DHNS): At long last, the Shiradi Ghat stretch, which connects Mangaluru with Hassan on National Highway 48, was thrown open to all types of traffic on Sunday. The move will bring relief to people who travel from Mangaluru to Bengaluru and vice versa.

Oscar Fernandes, who as Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways under the UPA government had sanctioned the project, opened the road for all types of traffic. The first phase of concretization (13 km) from Heggadde to Kempuhole at a cost of Rs 69.90 crore has been completed by M/s Ocean Constructions (India) Pvt Ltd, PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa told reporters at Gundya in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

The shouldering work (filling the edges) and fixing of signboards will be done simultaneously. The second phase works worth Rs 85.18 crore, which include asphalting from Gulagalale to Heggadde (21 km) and concretisation from Kempuhole to Addahole (13 km), will begin after monsoon.

B Ramanath Rai, the Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, lauded the contractor, saying it completed the work in seven months, though it was given 18-month deadline. Rs 1,000 crore has been released from the Central Road Fund for the work.

On the project to build a bypass to Shiradi Ghat, including a six-lane tunnel from Heggadde to Adda Hole worth Rs 10.15 crore, the final feasibility and the Detailed Project Report will be submitted to the government in May 2016. The 22.84-km project will be completed in four years once the DPR is submitted and the Japan International Cooperation Agency will fund it, said Mahadevappa.

The width of the tunnel is 14 metres and height 7.5 metres. The project has seven tunnels (12.41 km length) and 10 bridges (6.72 km). M/s Geo Consultant India Pvt Ltd has conducted a survey and submitted a report on three alternative alignments. A detailed discussion with the JICA representatives will be held in New Delhi on Tuesday. The tunnel route would connect Mangaluru port with Chennai port.

A sigh of relief finally the shiradi ghat road is operational. However right on the first day an accident is noted.
However as a suggestion: when accidents take place and the damage to public property (trees, signboards, barricades, road etc.) is noted then this need to be compensated to the government by the defaulters. This will benefit the government in maintaining the highway. Similarly, the NHAI should make use of the funds recovered to repair the damaged area.

Its opened finally only for a shortwhile. Then Acche Din again. Once again this road will be closed since the next concreting is double the distance, so double the time. Wow - what planning. We will never come near the other countries like China or the Middle least on Infrastructure.

Feel Shame myself looking at such a narrow road (planned for next 3 years) Where as gulf countries plan for road next 50 years or more. Don't we have such a planing team and have 4 lanes ( 4plus4 lanes) with the savings of at least 60 to 70% of the cost??? Ache din Kab ayenghe aisa chor dandhe chalthe rayenghe?? We are already Suffering from Konkan railways having single Line. again same mistake?????????

This is the only bit of compact nature left with flora and fauna in the south....
Let us try to revive this bit of rain forest like scenario..
for generations to enjoy..and leave behind.
while multiplying nature by planting trees.. and breeding endangered species of animals in captivity back to nature..increase and multiply this precious piece of land.
If you check the Arctics/Antarctica .. the damage has already happened and taking
    its toll.
the melted water is coming down south and causing floods in canada..usa etc.
so, let us preserve what ever God has blessed us with..
while crossing the Ghats ..there should be silence... no noise pollution: air pollution..no garbage .
All this needs discipline and Education..from school itself.
This is commitment..dedication...knowledge.. Love for nature.. love for mother India..
So please preserve this little piece of Beautiful..bounty we are blessed with with its awesome Flora and fauna..ENJOY!

While planning for Road tunnel in the ghat section they could have included a project feasibility report preferably for a double line railway tunnel,to meet the needs of next 100 years. The railway tunnel could have been used not only to run the present 40km per hour trains but also for super fast trains and thus reduce the travel time from many of the major cities of Karnataka to most of state capitals surrounding the state of Karnataka like Mumbai, Chennai and Trivendrum

This is indeed a great boon to the traveling public. It is good to know that the Shiradi Ghat road which lends a picturesque view has finally been d open.

This route used to be my favorite road while traveling from Madras to Mangalore. When my children were small they used to enjoy every bit of the journey. With my wife Irene around it was like a picnic for the whole lot.

Stopping on the road side enjoying the delicacies prepared by my wife used to lend further charm to the journey. Now at the age of ninety-four I am inclined to repeat the performance and RELIVE

O.K. Finally something good happened. Let's celebrate.
All flood prone roads should be concreted, for durability and to reduce maintenance cost.
Frequent closing of roads for repairs is very big problem and uncertainty for transportation.
