Amritsar, Aug 10 (IANS): The Punjab government is reviving the industrial estate at a historical town near here and has already allotted land to Nerolac Paints and Indian Oil Corporation to set up their units there, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Sunday.

Badal said that the state government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to revive the industrial estate at Goindwal Sahib, a religious town in Tarn Taran district, about 50 km from Amritsar.

The industrial focal point plan was first initiated in the 1980s but did not make any headway as Punjab saw a prolonged period of Sikh militancy (1982 to 1995) and Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts were hotbeds of terrorism during that time.

Badal announced the revival of the project during a visit to Amritsar on Sunday with his wife and union Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

"Under the industrial revival plan, after the setting up of a thermal plant at Goindwal Sahib, the Punjab government would allocate more industrial plots to industrial giants," he announced.

Badal has been touring various countries and states in recent months to attract investment to Punjab.

The agrarian state has not seen any major industrial investment in the last over two decades.
