Mangaluru: Following complaints, DC, mayor visit Pachanady dumping yard

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Aug 11: Following complaints of unhygienic surroundings and threat to public health, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, mayor Jacintha Alfred along with MCC officials on Tuesday August 11 visited Pachanady dumping yard and listened to the grievances of the residents.

The residents complained that dirty water had been flowing out of the dumping yard and contaminating open wells and borewells in the area, thus rendering the water unsuitable for drinking.

"Over 40 families live in this area and because of the dumping yard, the water in the wells has been contaminated and is stinking. It is not good for health," they said.

The also said that street dogs infest the area and worse, people often leave their mad dogs in the dumping yard causing not only danger to the residents but also giving rise to possibility of spread of harmful diseases.

"Though we have complained to officials a number of times, no action has been taken so far," they said. They also urged the DC to shift the dumping yard and gave a memorandum in this regard.

Speaking to daijiworld, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "The quality of dumping yard is poor. We visited the spot after receiving complaints from the residents of the area. I have asked the MCC to follow guidelines. I have also asked the mayor to hold a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday August 12) on issues like safety at dumping yard, maintenance and hygiene.

"I have also instructed the MCC to form a committee to review the process of dumping the garbage. The committee will visit the yard every week and review the situation.

Mayor Jacintha Alfred told daijiworld, "The dumping yard is facing problems of safety and cleanliness and the residents in the area are facing drinking water problems. Based on their complaints we visited the spot and tomorrow we will hold a meeting with Antony waste management company, health officers and the public.

"Within a week we will set right the basic problems and step by step we will try to solve all the problems faced by the residents," she assured.

MCC already added waste managing tax with the introduction of new "Antony Waste" management. With this the contractor must sensibly follow up proper waste management unless otherwise MCC failed to put this clause in the Scope of work.

Calling for meeting means, the contractor will ask for more funds and this in turn will passed to common man at the ratio of 1:10 (i.e. if contractor demands 1 rupee, MCC will charge 10 rupee to tax payers).

No one is thinking from practical point of view.

It is shocking to see that no Minister was there including JR for a photo show. Mayor was smart to answer that "we are going to solve problems step by step" But she did not say how many steps in how many years. MCC takes 10 steps forward while 9 steps backward. So only 1 step achieved, that is calling for another photo show to media. "Swachaa Bharath" graded Mangalore 11th on row. Survey people did see only Hampankatta Circle area and d the grades. Survey people must be high on... or just Illusions.

Jossey, listing is not making any move.. Bcz listeners are there, but action is ZERO.. Action is more important than, listening. Its her duty to check the dump yard by regular basis, not wait for getting complained from residential people. Before starting any work, MCC should evaluate the risk factors.. Now its an drama visit.. I suggest to residential people to vacate the place for your & your good health & future..

The only solution to the problems is shift the dump yard to some isolated place outside the city. It is impossible to solve the well water, borewell, street dogs and mad dog menace unless the dump yard is shifted elsewhere.

why should your city waste go to other remote area. They will dump it in other remote villages and pollute their water and soil. Before you city people produce waste think twice???Give a wake up call to waste management cell(if there is any one???) so that they can wake up from their deep sleep and have ground level action plan.
