Mangaluru, Aug 11: Following complaints of unhygienic surroundings and threat to public health, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, mayor Jacintha Alfred along with MCC officials on Tuesday August 11 visited Pachanady dumping yard and listened to the grievances of the residents.
The residents complained that dirty water had been flowing out of the dumping yard and contaminating open wells and borewells in the area, thus rendering the water unsuitable for drinking.
"Over 40 families live in this area and because of the dumping yard, the water in the wells has been contaminated and is stinking. It is not good for health," they said.
The also said that street dogs infest the area and worse, people often leave their mad dogs in the dumping yard causing not only danger to the residents but also giving rise to possibility of spread of harmful diseases.
"Though we have complained to officials a number of times, no action has been taken so far," they said. They also urged the DC to shift the dumping yard and gave a memorandum in this regard.
Speaking to daijiworld, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "The quality of dumping yard is poor. We visited the spot after receiving complaints from the residents of the area. I have asked the MCC to follow guidelines. I have also asked the mayor to hold a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday August 12) on issues like safety at dumping yard, maintenance and hygiene.
"I have also instructed the MCC to form a committee to review the process of dumping the garbage. The committee will visit the yard every week and review the situation.
Mayor Jacintha Alfred told daijiworld, "The dumping yard is facing problems of safety and cleanliness and the residents in the area are facing drinking water problems. Based on their complaints we visited the spot and tomorrow we will hold a meeting with Antony waste management company, health officers and the public.
"Within a week we will set right the basic problems and step by step we will try to solve all the problems faced by the residents," she assured.
