Bantwal, Aug 31: Bhuvith Shetty, who sparked a controversy after he posted a vitriolic comment on Twitter justifying the murder of renowned scholar and academic Prof M M Kalburgi, has been arrested by the Bantwal police. Prof Kalburgi was shot dead at his residence in Dharwad on Sunday August 30.
ASP Rahul Kumar confirmed the arrest.
Bhuvith Shetty, reportedly the co-convenor of Bantwal unit of Bajrang Dal, not only justified Prof Kalburgi's murder, but also warned that Prof K S Bhagwan, who is known for his controversial comments on Hinduism, would be 'next'.
"Then it was U R Anantamoorty and now its M M Kalburgi. Mock Hinduism and die a dog’s death. And dear K S Bhagwan, you are next," stated the message in his twitter handle @GarudaPurana posted at 10.41 am, just two hours after Prof Kalburgi was shot.
The post stirred up a heated debate on social media, with many retweeting and sharing the post in Facebook too.
Bhuvith deleted the tweets later, but screenshots of the tweets continued to go viral.
The Bantwal police registered a suo motu case against Bhuvith under IPC sections 153 and 506, and sources said that the Bengaluru police too have asked Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police (SP) to take appropriate action.
Last year, Bhuvith, a BCom graduate, had been arrested on charges of attempt to murder when he and other activists of Bajrang Dal tried to stop alleged cattle trafficking.
Sources said that a person named Nilim Dutta has written a letter to the additional chief secretary of the Karnataka home department urging action against Bhuvith.
Bhuvith was later released on bail.
