Chain snatchers hoodwink senior citizens, pocket jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lac

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Sep 1: In two separate incidents which occurred within the limits of Manipal police station on Sunday August 30, two elderly people were deceived by chain snatchers. In these two incidents, gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lac were taken away by the cheaters.

Rajeevi Prabhu (67) from Indrali here was walking towards her apartment after getting down from a bus at Laxmindranagara at around 3.15 pm when two persons seated in a motor bike stopped her in front of Kalkura Palace in V P Nagar. They distracted her attention in the guise of inquiring her flat number. Even as Rajeevi got alerted and said she did not know, one of the two yanked away a two and half sovereign gold chain from her neck. The value of the chain lost in this incident has been stated to be about Rs 40,000.

Vishnudas Bhat (63), a resident of Saralebettu in Manipal, was walking after crossing Tiger Circle at Manipal at 3.20 pm on Sunday, when two persons in a motor bike introduced one among them as a traffic policeman. The self-claimed policemen advised Bhat to desist from roaming around in the public with gold ornaments on his body and other valuables as he runs the risk of losing them. At his advice, Bhat removed his ornaments, after which the stranger kept the gold ornaments in a towel and handed over the folded towel to Bhat.

After the youth left, Vishnudas opened his towel to find that his cell phone and cash were intact, but golden chain and two rings had been taken away by the thieves.

The value of items lost in this incident has been estimated at Rs 1,10,000. The complainant said in the complaint that the registration number of the two-wheeler in which the strangers had accosted him started with MH 07.

This and other similar modus operandi to snatch ornaments was started and rampant in Mumbai since nearly 10 years ago, now these guys have shifted bases to small towns like Mangluru etc. where women like to boast their ornaments and there is very less awareness!!

It is the big mistake of these ladies to wear costly ornaments when going alone to bazaar/temple etc., it is an open invitation to these robbers!!

Chain snatching was once rampant in 90s. I remember two guys on rx100 snatched chain in front of venkatramana temple in carstreet. All of us chased them and bike fell flat near yenepoya-karnataka bank, end of VT road.

The boring narration will not go waste. This is interesting.
We were able to get hold of one person. other managed to escape. The one got caught was a medical student in a reputed medical college. He was from Kerala.
We , though young did not bash up the guy. Listened to him, called his parents and informed about the incidence and finally let him free with a warning. We did not involve the police too. He will definitely thank us for not spoiling his career. He should be practicing medicine somewhere now.

Senior citizens, why are you giving opportunity to chain snatchers? Better to avoid wearing gold ornaments when moving around alone. If so crazy, can wear some artificial chains which look like gold and can fool those opportunists. Of course, for a function you are in the company of others and safe to wear costly items. (also, show off)

somewhere someone cut women's finger to rob 'ring'.
somewhere someone cut women's earrings to rob 'ear rings'.
Due to increase of gold rate people are after snatching gold ornaments.
During early hours and at night..avoid wearing ornaments much. If wish to try to protect wearing something above the same.
Don't try to show to the world..we are wearing gold ornaments..will invite trouble.
Let patrolling constables keep watch on bicycle riders as well people who are in motorbikes.

When they are caught they are left to commit more robberies and misery on our good society. Old habits are hard to die, give them hard punishment, a life time beating should be give and they should forget to commit any more crime. When you get them please publish their photographs in all the police stations with WANTED FOR ROBBERY.

Now you came down directly to sene. Sene don't have any right to beat up anyone, just catch them and hand over the police. Police will take care of the rest. Don't show goondagiri while moral policing. Your moral policing always behind girls and those who are lovers. You should train your sena to nab the thief in the cases of robbery. chor log

many of these thieves lose money in betting during IPL, Kabbadi, cockfighting, etc. and to recuperate their losses, they steal from vulnerable senior citizens...most of them are youngsters in the 20-30 age group.
