Udupi, Sep 6: Two youths who mistook a call from the police as a prank from friends have had to pay a heavy price, with one of them landing in the hospital following alleged police atrocity in lock-up.

Awaiz (21), a resident of Malpe, was admitted to Ajjarkad district hospital after Malpe police, on the instructions of SI Ravi Kumar, allegedly beat him up in the lock-up on Sunday September 6.

It is said that Awaiz' friend Sampath had purchased a mobile phone from a person identified as Prasanna. As it turned out, the phone was reportedly stolen and the police were trying to trace its location.

Sampath therefore received a call from the Malpe police, but instead of taking it seriously, he thought some friends were playing a prank on him. He talked back in a condescending manner and passed on the phone to Awaiz who was with him at the time. Awaiz too thought it was a prank call and spoke rashly, it is said.

The police who took affront at the way the boys talked tracked down the phone's location and took Sampath into custody. During interrogation, he revealed information about Awaiz too, and the latter was summoned. It is learnt that Sampath too was allegedly beaten up by the cops in the lock-up.

However, Awaiz and his family grew worried and anxious, and locked up the house and left on Saturday September 5 night, but came back the next morning. The cops themselves visited the neighbourhood and informed the family about the summons. By noon, Awaiz accompanied by some family members appeared in the Malpe police station.

Awaiz and his family alleged that he was assaulted by six police personnel in the lock-up, on the instructions of SI Ravi Kumar. His uncle who tried to intervene was also reprimanded, it is alleged. The police also reportedly threated to file serious charges against Awaiz and make it difficult for him to obtain passport.

By 4 pm, Awaiz was released, after which he got admitted to Ajjarkad hospital.

Sources said that the hospital has sent an intimation to Udupi town police.

When contacted, SI Ravi Kumar said that he would look into the matter.

Awaiz is a first year BCom student at Manipal. The student body which reacted strongly to the incident has threatened to go on a protest.

The Police tracing a stolen Mobile ? I cant believe it. Because my son's smart phone worth Rs.30 000 was stolen in a Mangalore city bus and the police refused to put the phone's IMEI number on their TRACER machine and find out the present location of the mobile to trace the thief.
When any one goes to police station to lodge complaint about his stolen Mobile, the police openly refuse to take the complaint if you write in the complaint that mobile is "stolen'.
Instead they insist that you should write that your mobile is ""Misplaced or Lost".
Only if you write so they take the complaint and give you acknowledgement to enable you to block your old sim and obtain new sim from same company with same number.

The Police higher authorities (SP) should take this matter seriously and investigate. If police are just for beating up then who can trust police, how can general public have faith trust in police. It is high time police gets civilized and look after the society. They could easily summoned their parents as these are students and made them to sign a warning letter.

who has right and who not is difficult to understand.Whatever the matter is,youngsters should have taken the matter seriously and gone to the p.station to clear.why they spoke rudely?Thinking and acting in a polite manner is always better.Afterall mobile was stolen,am sure they knew it.Nowadays everyone has mobile,so no question of "borrowing".In Police Station assault from Police is no go.They should handle anyone with respect, even a thief,a goonda or a Business man. Here they should take a lawyer and clear the matter instead of strike.

its obvious that the boys thought it to be prank by some of his friends. as they are young boys without any criminal background i feel its not right on the part of the police to simply beat them up, this is how youths turn to be criminals next. folks donot worry Mr, Annamalai is there he will take care of the situation and give the required justice.
i request S,P, Saab to calll those youths and give them some soothing words .

The body language of the girl in attavar incident video clearly says that when the script writing started.A lady asking for somebody help will never say sorry with the so called protectors. If mangalore police understand tulu language then no chance of filing FIR on boy as per video clip which confirms mutually accepted relationships.

Its high time some rotten apple in the Police force has to stop their Policgiri aka Goondagiri. Its very common that just because they have uniform and a authority they misuse such power to target innocents. Looking at incidents like these it give some sense why the Lawyers took on Kadri Police. Its highly recommended that people going to Police stations no matter for any reason should take Lawyer with them just to be safe until this system is repaired. Am sure out there there would be some good responsible lawyers who would not charge or be reasonable charging for such visits. Indian Customs & Police have their own way targeting harmless innocents while in front of the powerful politicians, their chelas, Goondas they wag their tail and put in between.
