Udupi: Assault in lock-up: Students demand action; SP chides them for bunking classes

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Sep 7: Chaos prevailed at SP's office here on Monday September 7 after students gheraoed SP Annamalai while submitting a memorandum demanding action against six personnel of Malpe police for allegedly assaulting two students in lock-up.

A student named Sampath had purchased a mobile phone which was supposedly stolen eight months ago. When he received a call from the Malpe police who were trying to trace the phone, he assumed it to be a prank call from friends, and spoke rashly. Awaiz too spoke to the police in a similar manner and both were later allegedly assaulted in the lock-up. Awaiz was admitted to hospital.

Angered by the incident, scores of students arrived at the SP's office here and demanded action against the police personnel involved in the incident.

SP Annamalai reprimanded the students for bunking classes on a Monday morning. "If you want to submit memorandum, just two or three students could have come. So many students cannot bunk classes and protest here," he told the students.

"The two students spoke rudely with a head constable who is double their age. We will investigate the case from three angles - students misbehaving with the head constable who called them, theft of mobile phone and assault in lock-up as alleged by students. Appropriate action will be taken against the guilty. But we cannot suspend any policeman right now," he said.

The parents of the two students requested the police not to file theft case against their sons, as it would jeopardise their future. Considering their concerns, no case has been filed.

The group of students complained that the police had not come to the Ajjarkad hospital where Awaiz was admitted to take his statement, and instead he was told to come to the police station. In response, the SP said, "The police personnel were busy with providing security for Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. They will visit the hospital and record the statement."

Convinced by the SP's assurance, the students dispersed.

Its just an one side story from students. Because, police will not take any action untill its over the limit. Now a days all are like to shine in media, so they are using the way called " Protest". But in their group, many may be dont know the reason behind the protest like " Jana Marl, Jaathre Marl". Bunking class is students day by day habit, its by protest or strike. They need just reason for bunk the class. And as well as we all know that, the language which the youth is using to assault anyone is ridiculous.
Dear SP, dont worry for this issues. These all time waste things, you have lot to do for our district.

The students should have been warned instead of man handling in the police custody. Police can just swing the baton like Virendra Shewag or Vivian Richards on students. The police personnels should be booked under appropriate acts.

Strict action should be taken against these protesting students. They had no business to behave like political trade unions. If encouraged, these students go on to become useless dharna wallahs, protesting for everything, without contributing anything to society

We have once seen the outcome of a prank call in the case of princess of London and how Nurse Jacintha lost her life. We still don't learn our lesson.

If the call is from landln to lndline i can understand. But if the call comes on the mobile is the recipient so blind as to not see whether the number is a known or unknown one.

Police are not foolish to hit boys only for speaking rudely.

They were using a stolen mobile.. How can police trust them blindly... what if they stole mobile themselves... To reveal d truth police will definitely use some force... its their duty.

May be these student might have mistaken police call for their friends as police used to talk in a strong or rude language. But most of the police are not that strict as they speak as they are after money for every complaint or police work. There are some good policemen and police officer too. Police lose respect in society due to the corrupt practices of taking money from the people for any police related cases. There are some policemen who think that demanding money and getting it is their birth right to do any work.

Its a lifetime lesson for those 2 guys that misbehaving and being rash over the telephone will have its own repercussions. All these students, wasting their time on the cock and bull story of these two students.
Being a student, does not get any special privilege. You have to be responsible when you interact with unknown strangers. Police are right in this and SP is humane as he has not charged them with theft case.
