Udupi, Sep 9: The officials of Udupi city municipal council (CMC) on Wednesday September 9 tried to forcibly evict a stree vendor near KSRTC bus stand, but were stopped by the public who protested against the sudden move.

It is said that the official led by CMC commissioner Manjunathayya tried to evict Kanakaraj, a fruit vendor who has been doing business here for the past 14 years. It is learnt that the eviction drive was conducted without any prior warning or notice.

Seeing the officials forcibly evict Kanakaraj and destroy his cart and fruits, the public gathered at the spot and protested against the officials.

"You are allowing illegal buildings to come up but targetting the poor who work hard for a living. You are not taking action against illegal buildings but you want to show your might on poor street vendors," the people told the officials.

Also, as per the central government order, the street vendors are supposed to be given badges and they also pay Rs 20 per day as tax to the CMC. Despite this, they are being targetted and harassed, the people said.

It is learnt that Kanakaraj and other street vendors were given permission to do business in interior areas of Ambalpady and other areas, but as business was not good in these places, Kanakaraj shifted to the spot near the bus stand.

Bowing to public pressure, the officials went back without completing the eviction.

Speaking to daijiworld, CMC commissioner Manjunathayya said that Kanakaraj had been warned earlier and told to evict, but he did not relent. "The street vendors have been told not to occupy areas with heavy traffic as it adds to the congestion. There are no particularly densely populated areas in Udupi where street vendors can do good business. I have already held talks with the DC to earmark certain areas for street vendors where the crowd is more. We conducted this raid as there were repeated complaints from the public."

Why no one protests against the Auto drivers, who occupy the crowded area, not allowing the private vehicles to even visit nearby shop by parking for few minutes.

Where ever they found little place they put a sign board of Auto stand.?? They are so rude thinking that Private car owners not paying road tax.

For the last fourteen years the vendor has been doing the business with out any hurdles. How that is possible?

Looks like he did not come to terms with the CMC commissioners demand (indirectly) to pay increased amount of collection. (Hafta)
In the mean, time aren't there other vendors in that area?
Collection usual done by lower grade person and would be shared with bosses.

Though it is illegal to make business like this in traffic disruption area, but one thing I noticed in Udupi region that, we can get much fresh and better fruits than what is available in Big Bazaar.

Well done commissioner. There are many fruit shops they pay rent & tax to CMC. One who is legally makes business suffers loss and kanakaraja without paying anything makes business and also creates traffic jams.

"... we conducted this raid as there were repeated complaints from the public" Did they dare to conduct raids on parking areas encroached by buildings, shopping malls etc.. Damaging his cart and fruits is not less than stealing his daily bread..

CMC should provide designated areas for street vendors first, like Singapore and Hong Kong, which is helpful for public and the vendors, and at the same time avoid inconvenience to public by those who occupy roads, foot paths (illegally) for their trade, before taking any action.

I do agree with your comment , its difficult for the public movement ,but harassing on spot it dosen't make sense, at least they can tell or give them prior notice to vacate the place so that they can do some other arrangements.

Shameful act, These officials can show their attitude and greatness only with poor hard working people who struggle to achieve their daily bread, in fact there are so many land and properties which are illegally occupied where these officials need to raise their voice instead of harassing daily bread winners, well done Locals

no idea whether it's right or wrong. because this may mislead other vendors to get in to all kind of these street business. Ideally, there are rules and regulations, which need to be followed. justifying others break and hence let us also break, it's wrong... according to me. any ways, one thing right here. if the public want to stop something, how easy to stop it. we can make use of this power in all bad things happening in the society. Really.

Good move by the general public to protest against the eviction of a poor street vendor who slogs for a living. It is to be appreciated.

I wish more and more people came forward in a similar fashion and protest against moral policing too.
