Karkala, Sep 11: "No one has the right to take law into their hands. If you notice illegal activities like cattle theft, bring them to the notice of police immediately," advised Udupi district superintendent of police (SP), Annamalai.
He was addressing a public meeting organized at the police station here on Thursday September 10 relating to issues like Ganeshotsava celebrations, Bakrid, and cattle trafficking.
"We have formed a separate team at the district level to handle cattle thefts. This team will keep vigil over this activity round the clock. At the same time, as a precautionary measure against recurrence of cattle thefts, we also conducted a parade of persons accused of this activity, who had been nabbed earlier, in the police station," he explained.
The SP directed the policemen to put their canes to use without any hesitation, if Hindu or Muslim youngsters form gangs, take law into their hands, indulge in gang fights, lay siege to police station, or raise slogans against the police. He requested people not to create a situation in which police will be compelled to take harsh steps against them.
Reacting to a question, Annamalai said that it has come to his notice that armed gangs of cattle thieves are operating. Therefore, he said that the police personnel guarding at the check posts would be provided with arms of self defence. He said that the police have come to know about incidents of religious conversion at certain places, and promised to take action against the guilty. He also instructed the local police circle inspector to arrest the thieves involved with cattle theft at Renjala recently.
The SP asked people not to feel overwhelmed if they receive death threats through internet. He asked them to convey the caller's number and time of such call to the police immediately to enable them to register a case and make efforts to trace the culprits.
Deputy superintendent of police, Vinay S Nayak, circle inspector, G M Naykar, and city police sub-inspector, Imran, were present at the dais.
