Mangalore/Bantwal, Jul 6: A five-member gang which arrived in a Maruti car and assaulted M K Sachin at Farangipet while he was returning home after completing his daily duties. 

As Sachin, said to be an RSS leader, was riding his motorcycle home from Mangalore to B C Road. A Maruti car followed him from Padil and they accosted him near Sevanjali in Farangipet and assaulted with logs. 

The accused have been identified as Shahul Hameed, Mohammed Iqbal, and Mohammed Sadiq, all residents of Bantwal Talapady and Salim, a resident of Bantwal Kaikamba and others. One of them was also found carrying a knife.  However, Sachin managed to escape from the hands of the accused and reached the Farangipet police outpost.  The police from Bantwal rural station arrived on the scene, dispersed the crowds and seized the car at Brahmarakotlu.

The car driver, Salim, has been absconding while Shahul Hameed, Mohammed Iqbal, Mohammed Sadiq have been arrested.  The other two of the accused managed to escape from the scene.

Since a large number of people gathered, the police had to control the law and order problem that was created. Sachin was serving as the main trainer of the RSS.  He has played a key role during the RSS meet held at Shamboor High School, in 2006. 

The police have ruled out any communal angle in the attack, but instead blamed political rivalry. It could be an act of revenge, they added. However, one of the accused is said to have told the police that it was a case of mistaken identity.
