Kasargod, Sep 17: High drama prevailed here on Wednesday September 16 after an accused in a murder case held a sudden press meet to claim his innocence and was later assaulted by DYFI activists.
Mangad resident Biju (31), who was absconding for the last two years, held a sudden press meet on Wednesday in which he alleged that he had been made a scapegoat. He is the seventh accused in the murder of CPM activist Balakrishnan, which took place at Mangad on the night of September 16, 2013.
"Being a Congress activist, some of the party leaders have made me an accused and despite being innocent I have been undergoing mental agony over the last two years. So, I am surrendering before the police," Biju announced in the press meet.
Biju was coming out after the press meet when he was stopped by a group of DYFI activists and assaulted.
A few journalists saved him from the assaulted. Tension prevailed in the vicinity for nearly half an hour. DYFI workers shouted slogans and sat on protest saying that they would not hand over Biju to police.
Police who arrived after receiving information asked the activists to spare him. There were heated arguments between the activists and the police before Biju was allowed to be taken to the police station with security.
