Mangaluru as Smart City: Meeting discusses proposal for govt's first list

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JS)

Mangaluru, Sep 18: The district administration on Friday September 18 convened a meeting to discuss plans and strategies in order to ensure Mangaluru makes it to the first list of 20 Smart Cities.

Mangaluru is among the six places from Karnataka chosen for union government's ambitious Smart City Mission, in which 100 cities/towns from across the country will be upgraded over a period of five years. Among the 100, twenty cities will be chosen by the end of this year in the first lot to receive central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the next five years. In the next two years, 40 cities each will be selected for the funding.

The meeting, held at DC's office here, was presided over by district incharge minister Ramanath Rai.

The meeting discussed preparatory actions to be taken in order to get Mangaluru in the first list of the Smart City project. Member of parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, mayor Jacintha Alfred, consultancy team appointed by the union government and officials of MCC were present.

During the meeting, discussion was held regarding submission of proposal to include Mangaluru in the first list of 20 cities, which has to be sent to the central government before December. City corporation consultant Dharmaraj explained the technical details. District incharge minister suggested the officials to form a task force to oversee the proposal.

MLA J R Lobo asked the officials to highlight the USP of Mangaluru that is its connectivity like air, water, road and railways. The DC directed the officials to prepare the project report by the end of October.

Consultants representing the union government said the proposals submitted by the 98 cities chosen so far for the Smart City Mission will be sent to Bloomberg Philanthropies, which is providing technical and strategic support to the project. Among the proposals, Bloomberg will choose the best 20, and these cities will be developed in the first phase. The consultants further said that apart from the proposal, other factors like political environment and elections will also play a role.

J R Lobo said the Smart City project should bring more investment into the city, so that more capital flows in and there is economic growth.

The present team in the picture has not thought and has any history of creating anything that new for Mangalore. First of wall we need a young educated team from local schools colleges and Universities which can guide to draft a smart city requirement.
There are 7 International flights landing in Mangalore and we still do not have an airport highway which can connect without traffic and complete four lane until the airport.
We do not have public toilets and public drinking water points with a purified water dispenser for the general public.
We do not have foot path for the safety of the general public. And we do not have roof covered bus stands for the people to take a seat and wait for the bus.
We do not have a clean toilet, seating arrangements at registration office where crores of money is collected for land and building registration six days a week.
We do not have parking for the people who arrive to Mangalore for shopping or other needs but we have a RTO that collected tons of money every day.

Daijiworld is competitive platform to create an appeal and give suggestion on what should be done for a ‘smart city’ concept and what we need in Mangalore to call ourselves as a competitive smart city.
As Daijiworld is only platform that is reaching most of the educated and professionals in and out of country who can provide more inputs to make a list and draw a outline map for a Mangalore smart city.
I would like to request all readers and comment on this site to make appeal to the editor or the concerned people to create a page where people can input their ideas and expectations out of a ‘smart city’ Mangalore .
The elected representatives might be experienced in giving out speeches and face the assembly arguments in Bangalore but in real life it is the general public that is going to face this smart city.
They might design and submit a report which is directly or indirectly benefit their party or the business community but may not be beneficial for the local general public.
We need a smart city which should unique and as unique and should have that touch which Mangalore is famous for Education, Hospital and hospitality.

Good start by Modi govt. First pl complete the half/incomplete work of Roads, footpaths, parking area, bus stops, traffic jam etc. Keep away all politically motivated people because they try to mess the program and focus their eyes on money/commission/contracts etc. Include respected/educated/common citizens from each corp.area - not corporators to monitor the progress..

How can they manage it now when most of the roads are just adjacent to huge concrete buildings, they will have to demolish most of the buildings to get space for footpaths, drainage, parking etc.!! It is only possible at the planning stage, compare with the satellite city of Navi Mumbai beautifully planned by the world renowned architect late Charles Correa at the inception!!!

Needless to say, all these infrastructure facilities should be taken care of before starting of building the concrete jungle, it is too late in the day now!!

Over and above that the Akrama/Sakrama facility got passed wherein illegal structures would be made legal, what more do you want to not being able to make much of an improvement in infrastructure at this stage!! Jai Hind!!

Smart City-We are already there. Achievement of MLA.
1 Bejai Market not finished since ten years. Fish and Chicken meat sold on road side. Swaach Bharath near BJP ex Ministers House.
2 Mallikatta Bendoor Concrete road half done with life threatening spots on it.
    3. Mallikatta to Nanthoor Concrete road stopped at Capitol Building near Jimmy's Store. Already few accidents have taken place. May be MLA should install a Hoarding warning the People "Be ready with Your Last Material Will as You may get killed any minute on this Road"
4 Health Hazard Kadri Market near MLA Office and Chamber of Commerce where smart people will be sitting for a pint and Health Inspectors Office inside the Market. Very Smart City.
5.Rickshaw stand near Karavali Circle Junction where not a single vehicle stops. Another Smart Thinking.
6.Jyothi to Bunts Hostel Concrete road to kill Pedestrians. Death warning board should be hung neat Woodland Hotel. Another Smart Designed Work inside Smart City.
    7. Illegal Banners and Hoardings by Advertisers related to who? Tax fraud and scam.
    8. Town Hall racket is still going on. Need investigation of fraud.
    9. Rupees 29 Lac Gate for Kadri Park, while roads are falling apart and foot paths are not there. People have to walk like Cattle and Dogs in middle of the road along with Vehicles to reach Kadri Park inside Smart City.
Look at the photos and judge. NRI's Beware about all this propaganda. Look who is talking.

Totally agree with all the points stated here. I have been living in mangalore for a long time now and all I noticed are plans considered by the government that are carried out half way through!
I remember that the highway widening plan was supposed to have been for a period of 5 years max but it's been 8 years now and is still in the stage of development.
Completion of footpaths near concrete roads isn't followed everywhere.
Large Trees are cut on a large scale to build these roads and shrubs are planted in place of them. I hope the people involved know what difference does it make to the environment.
Buildings and apartments are erected yearly without proper parking space and green standards and expect the environment to remain the same?
I hope the people involved have noticed shortage of rainfall this year.
Prices of food items soaring to new heights.
I am not sure why the ministers and mla's are after the title of 'Smart City' rather than a 'Clean and Eco-friendly City'. We all know what happened to major cities like Bangalore when it went after becoming a smart city. Why go after becoming like some other city rather than going after a quality that defines it from the others?

When will all these ministers hold a meetin to complete these unfinished work which should have been completed years back? Not even a single road is 100% complete here with all the requirements like footpath, parking area or drainage system! Smart city will basically make all these people's pockets smart thats it! Please first hold a meeting and sort out and finish off the unfinished work here then think of making this a smart city!

Immoral Rowdysm brought bad name to Mangaluru. So, before investing on city, bring those narrow minded people to right path. Make them understand, what is humanity and brotherhood. Invest in counselling those trouble makers and make them responsible citizens. Otherwise everything is waste.

How can city become smart when there are big number of fools?

Investors and hesitating to invest. Students fear to come here for education. Sick people do not wish to come here for treatment, even though we have high quality medical facilities. Tourists are unsure of their safety and s plan of visiting city. In this cases, what is the use wasting hundreds of crores? Spend that big amount in building houses for poor, who can't afford to have one. Invest in orphans and needy.

    Thank You.

Problems are natural anywhere. But before taking up smart city in Mangaluru, firstly let Central Govt insists to complete the back log works like Highway widening, completion of proper footpath at wherever concrete roads are built, proper maintenance of public toilets etc. Otherwise these backlog works will be pending simply just because of smart city.
