Udupi, Sep 23: There was excitement at Malpe harbour here on Wednesday September 23 after a fisherman made a huge catch during a fishing expedition into the deep sea.
The fisherman caught a huge whale shark in his nets.
The shark, weighing nearly 2,500 kg and 35 feet in length, had to be pulled ashore using a crane.
As news got around, a large number of curious people flocked to the spot to see the rare catch.
It is said that as most of its body is made of water, it is not suitable for consumption and does not fetch a price in the local market. Hence, it was later thrown back into the sea.
As per Wikipedia, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest known extant fish species. The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and warm temperate seas.
