Kundapur, Sep 25: The Kundapur police on Friday September 25 raided a spot in a wooded area at Mavinakatte under Gulvady panchayat limits, where illegal slaughtering of cows was going on.
The prime accused Rashid alias Rishid managed to escape and a search for him is on.
On Friday morning, Rashid along with two others allegedly slaughtered two cows at a spot among the trees behind Rashid's house. On receiving credible information, the Kundapur police raided the spot and found meat and skins of two cows. A male calf was kept ready for slaughtering.
As soon as they spotted the police, the accused fled from the spot. The police took possession of the meat, skin and the tools used for the slaughtering and also the calf. Sources said that such illegal slaughtering was going on at the same spot earlier too, but it is not known how and from where Rashid brought the cows.
As news of the raid spread, a tense atmosphere prevailed at the spot after two groups gathered and began arguing. One group expressed anger at the police for letting the accused escape. There was heated exchange of words as more people began to gather.
When the situation threatened to go out of hand, the police resorted to mild lathi charge and after some efforts, managed to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
The raid by Kundapur police was led by Sudha Prabhu. Circle inspector Diwakar and inspector Naseer visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
Kundapur police have registered a case.
